  1. Phil, I think you are mistaken. People don't vote just for or against tax cuts. They vote for effective allocation of their money. And if someone promises them "no tax rises, steady rose in your pension, no contribution to the EU", they will prefer that to "tax rises across the board and nationalise rail, mail, water, energy, broadband". That just smacks of "using my money to buy power for the elites"

  2. People are ok to pay for the NHS because they know they or someone in their family will benefit from it. Ok to pay for the police and even schools, because this secures there future generation who will work and care for them. But if they and their family have the security of steady employment or business, then why would they want to pay taxes that go to social security? The next step would be to tax to invest in future technologies, that will be popular too, because people know we need them to compete effectively in the world
