@mir-jan3496 Russia is rich in resources but also rich in corruption. 1 of those takes away the benefits the other can bring. Japan stopped being occupied a long time ago however.

@mir-jan3496 Corruption in Russia is worse than in many other nations. See Freedom House comparisons or other organizations that look into corruption for further comparisons. All Putin did was make sure he got a large cut from the corruption. That is how Putin ended up a billionaire. You should inform yourself more. Japan has been its own nation for decades, ditto for South Korea. With the people of each nation picking who their leaders are rather than some other nation nor some internal dictator seizing power for himself.

@martinduke368 Actually someone who studied power in the USA and wrote on it said that he no longer feels that power always corrupts. Instead he came to the conclusion power always reveals-basically that once someone has power then their secret desires will stop being secret because they will act on them more openly since less and less people will be in a position to stop them.

@martinduke368 Not quite. With the 1 view pretty much anyone who is handed power goes bad with it. There are some people who have had power and stayed at least relatively decent human beings. The 2nd part serves as a warning to watch out with regards to what kind of people you hand power to-granted, if they keep motivations hidden that can be harder to keep an eye out for but we can still try.

@martinduke368 Levels of scale. Never said DC doesn't have corruption and sadly it is likely I never will. That said Putin still manages to be worse. Also it isn't the nature of government to be corrupt but what effort is or is not made to prevent corruption.

@wowwolf2678 That sounds like another in a long list of excuses to not address problems related to the particular pipeline that is most in the news (others already exist). That being it endangers local lands and waters, would aid in making Global Warming worse, and the oil is not even intended for the USA (which is the nation much of it would be shipped through and have its lands and waters damaged when spills or leaks occur-and that particular kind of oil has been noted for being more likely to be pipeline leak prone than oil usually is).

The irony of your statement in this situation is that Putin is trying to force something other than democracy on Ukraine when Ukrainians already have democracy and want to keep it.

@valyagul Many people work long hours for decades and never end up billionaires. Claiming Putin is old is not an excuse nor explanation. Putin's corruption is an explanation even if it is inexcusably bad.

I found it odd you included that remark when Biden was the strongest in terms of dealing with Putin. Also that Ukrainians officials resigned when many were fired for being corrupt. Now I wouldn't be shocked if it turned out there was a problem with Biden or Zelenskyy, but so far each seems to be doing ok and the former is an improvement over the prior President. Now there may not be a way to "truly know" but that doesn't mean there aren't ways to increase the chances of guessing correctly by making the guess more educated.

Not only do I doubt it but that statement is hardly "not taking sides". You side stepped the biggest reason Putin tried to invade Ukraine. Ukraine's elections are honest while currently Russia's are not.

Kiki Why be so committed to Ukraine? Because it is both morally correct and in he national interest to do so. Plus Biden has seen where the failure of not doing more led to more problems rather than solving them.

Because like many movies it is a story. Unlike many movies it involves real people rather than characters. While I'm sure it gets some things wrong and is too short to fully enclose all or even enough details it also shows some lessons such as leaving problems unaddressed (like Putin) can result in more problems.

Democracy isn't control by the elites, it is control by the people. That is why elites often dislike it and frequently try to undermine it to various degrees.

@ChristopherPoitras It is 1 sided, however that is not your initial complaint. If Putin wants to share his inner thoughts during the meetings mentioned I'd be fine with that and welcome it-provided he does so honestly.

That Putin wants Ukraine-so yes it did. Now it could have gone into further detail that taking Crimea gave Putin a location to attack other parts of Ukraine and also access to a bunch fossil fuels he could steal from Ukraine like natural gas and additional control in the land near a Russian naval base.. but it still managed to get the main reason Putin took Crimea-because Putin wants Ukraine.

Lawrence Osh You mean include Putin's lies and excuses? Not a bad though but then going though Putin's lies and excuses would take a fair amount of time. For example Putin is less worried about NATO expanding than that Zelenskyy was honestly elected and with each honest election that was more honest than those in Russia Ukraine was becoming less rather than more attached to Russia and Putin in particular.

Weel Lou Biden getting a corrupt prosecutor to lose his job when he should've been gone earlier and was seen as corrupt both internationally (not just by the USA) and inside Ukraine because the prosecutor was corrupt is not acting "harshly in Ukraine". It is part of trying to make things better for most people-inside and outside of Ukraine. Yes I kow there is a lie the prosecutor was supposedly going after Biden and that Biden was supposedly just protecting his own money. Thing is that is still a lie and that the prosecutor was seen as-and actually was-corrupt is true.

jmy The US war in Afghanistan wasn't overthrowing a government such as joining a faction in a civil war that was fighting against a faction that hosted a terrorist organization that carried out an attacks on the US that could be seen as cause for war if done by a nation. The situation in Libya actually involved the overthrow of a government-but by rebel groups that the US helped after the sitting dictator of Libya had been killing people who started out as mere protestors. Not a fan of the corrupt the US allowed to fester in Afghanistan nor the civil war in Libya (something a Putin henchman got involved in). But there is a difference between both of those and Putin invading Ukraine because he wants to take away the freedoms to pick their own leaders that Ukrainians have as well as grab land-which Russia has plenty of already.

@weelou4203 Sounds like you are trying to blame the victim. FYI Russia rates as more corrupt than Ukraine but with elections that are less honest. So the people of Ukraine have reason to not want Putin running their nation. Also trying to save his nation and people from an oppressor is doing something for his people-I suspect Zelenskyy's popularity has gone up among Ukrainians rather than down due to this war.

Ukrainians are wise not to want him as their President nor to be picking their President for them. If Putin did odds are high their lives would get worse and freedoms they have would disappear. The issues with Hunter Biden are so tiny compared to Putin (or Trump for that matter) that they are a joke in comparison. And, unlike Putin, Hunter never stopped people from having honest elections nor does he have blood on his hands. Years ago an older Russian man once told me the that Putin was bringing fear back-not outside Russia but within. He also told me that Russia has always had wealth but never uses it well. At the time I had no idea how correct he would be nor how corrupt Putin would be. I don't know if I would call it wiser or more experienced but I am far less naive about Putin than I once was. A question you should ask is how many more people have to die or how much more does Putin have to try to steal before you become less naive about Putin as well.

@piusnyaboga903 That may depend on whomever the Russian mafia is bribing or threatening at the moment. Oddly enough it is probably worse for many people in Russia, though that may be less the Russian mafia in specific and more a Russian government that acts as a mafia.

Seems there is some scapegoating going on to avoid looking at if problems are internal or external. Kind of like all your talk of Putin supposedly being "intellectual in economics and law" skips over that he is 1 of the richest people on the planet because he has stolen from a whole nation (Russia). And no, it is not a "throne". If Putin was an actual President when he would know his job is to address the concerns and problems of the Russian population. Not to have stolen from them nor be a lord over them. Also I never accused Putin of working hard. Granted maybe he does as starting wars and stealing a sizable portion of a nation's wealth both take time. @westorzeski7189 I can see differences in just the last 24 years. 1st half of that the US invaded other nations (1st time with a clear reason justifying it and 2nd time not). Then it got over trying to take over other nations. Putin decided he was just going to keep grabbing parts of neighboring nations and more recently figured he would try to take down the whole government of 1 of them. He found out that it didn't really work but rather than leave he opted to proclaim them part of Russia no matter what the people living there think and here we are.

Yet much of what it said was correct. Now if it focused more on Ukraine it could've gone into how Putin is very concerned Ukraine has honest elections while Putin's Russia does not and that sooner or later many Russians may start asking why Ukrainians could change Presidents but not Russians. But that is not where the focus was.

@arthurpetrashov5088 You have more experience watching Russian tv than I do then. However is it possible that this documentary has more truth in it than 1 n Russian tv, that Putin's has wanted control over Ukraine and responses to his own earlier actions were comparatively soft?

@damongulick3497 Trump has cheated people working for him-for example he had immigrant workers snuck in to tear down part of a building and then didn't even pay them the lower pay (compared to regular workers) that was promised. Now that doesn't relate to Putin-which this documentary focuses on. But it could have spent more time on the Russian money the Trump organization has taken in.

Not panicking, also the reason that wasn't gone into enough on this is that Putin's war on Ukraine is also because he doesn't like that Ukrainian Presidents are honestly elected while Putin is not.

Yes there was. Not only were the usual wars still there but Trump wanted to start a war with Iran before leaving and general in his administration had to tell him not to.

There is a stripper pole in Putin's place which he built with money he stole by being profoundly corrupt. In addition to all the lies Putin has told there is a question of just how many kids he has. And this isn't even getting into how much blood is on Putin's hands-often of innocent people or people with better morals than Putin.

The USA didn't elect Zelenskyy, the Ukrainian people did and over a different Ukrainian President that was already in office and Pro-West. I've seen talk of big powers toppling governments in Ukraine already and it is actually very wrong because it routinely ignores the will of the Ukrainian people and is often put forwards that way to paper over that President Zelenskyy is honestly elected while Putin is not. "Putin attacked Ukraine after NATO's relentless expansion" Ukraine wanted to join NATO, Germany vetoed it to appease Putin and Putin attacked anyway. Not only was NATO expansion not the main reason Putin attacked but it was hardly "relentless". Also calling it that overlooks that nations have to request to join NATO thus it involves both current NATO members not vetoing a request to join and the potential new member nation wanting to join enough that it asks to. "Russia attacked Ukraine after many failed negotiations with USA" This goes back to the earlier problem of trying to pretend the Ukrainian people themselves don't have a say. They didn't want Putin running their nation-they still do not. "Even after world war 2 there are many instances where one country attacked another sovereign country" There are but for awhile the number decreased. Also there are times the attacking nation was punished for launching the attack. But even if someone sets aside and ignores those times the attacking nation was punished for attacking that still does not mean Ukrainians want Putin running their nation-they did not and still do not.

And yet the US was one of those nations supporting debt relief for some third world nations that were in debt traps. The US has done plenty that was selfish yet that was willfully helping other nations.

@President.GeorgeWashington If you follow the direction the thread of comments after your initial remark went it drifted into the "no good or evil" cynicism I was remarking on. Though in your initial comment you said "Geopolitics shows us there are no "good guys and bad guys". Which lends itself to arguing there is no good or evil-a sentiment that is factually wrong. Nations may often act in their own interests in an amoral fashion but not always. And even if the governments' actions are amoral that sure doesn't mean they each cannot be examined to see if they are what people would define as good or evil.

Well tankie, he was probably hoping with a 2nd term Trump could've ended NATO for him-which, if successful would've made taking not only Ukraine but other nations afterwards much easier for him. Now Putin is still trying but it is a lot harder.

@volslover1504 I would have more sympathy for the argument he was trying to increase funding for NATO rather than break it-from my POV breaking it seemed like a 2nd term possibility/goal with him. Also if comparing Trump to Biden on racism Biden is better for black people by far and happens to get less support from racists. So maybe what you said on that is not an accurate representation of the situation right now.

Odd how correctly you say they omitted it yet Biden was still the hardest on Putin. In comments further below others accuse Biden of blowing it up (without the evidence to support the claim). Regardless it is a fair point to make that it should have been included. That said it is less important than discussing an active shooting war so if a choice had to be made in terms of what to cut then it is not unreasonable to say they included something more important.

Except Putin is currently the only leader that has been threatening to use nukes during this situation and also that Putin-not Biden is currently trying to wipe another nation off the world map (and thankfully failing).

@LaMostraVia Like I said ealier. Moral interest and national interest. Plus Biden has experience-he saw what happened before when Putin was not checked. Now you may not want to get into if what Putin is doing is right or wrong but that it is wrong makes it very easy for many people to oppose. So regardless of what you want that is still a factor. Also the pattern of the initial invasion suggests Putin had other nations in mind to attack after Ukraine. Thankfully Ukraine proved harder than he expected. Putin's statements can lead 1 to believe he wants to reconquer any territory a Russian Czar once held-which involves multiple nations of which Ukraine is only 1 but still a large 1. Additionally some strategic theorists argue he wants to extent Russian control out to a string of mountains that go though part of Europe-thus again meaning several nations are what he has in mind to attack at some point. Setting all that aside it is still a blatant display of imperialism. That alone makes this destabilizing because borders stop meaning anything if imperialism gets going again. FYI Some of the nations Putin would like a chunk of are already in NATO-thus attacking the could mean nuclear war. Best stop Putin before that happens in order to make that possibility less likely.

For example that NATO never invaded 1 of its members to crush a popular revolt while the Moscow controlled Warsaw Pact did. Also 1 of the primary things the KGB did was try to keep the population under control. Now more recently the US was so eager for Ukraine to "stock up" that under Obama it refused to provide weapons. Now if I was Ukrainian and Russia has moved its army into Crimea (part of my country) as well as given a rebel group in the East control over so much weaponry that it shot down a civilian passenger jet then getting more weapons would be a sane thing to do considering how unneighborly a neighboring nation was. Also Ukraine wanted to get into NATO for years and Germany vetoed it at the time in an attempt to appease Russia. Which Putin disproved the value of last year. Of course that would be to miss 1 of the main reasons NATO is brought up in discussions like this. To try to provide cover for arguing that imperialism is ok as long as it is being practiced by Putin.

I do, yet that was not 1 of Putin's aids. It was the then sitting President of Russia. I have zero doubt that Putin tried to influence elections. You can question what % of Trump getting 1 term in the White House was due to Putin vs other factors but Putin did try to influence the election.

JOEJIPPBEAT Putin likely has wanted to invade Ukraine for a few years-it is part of the reason that large bridge was built from Russia to Crimea. Also land grabbing is not usually done to get other nations to back off, it is done when there are resources or wealth to grab and the actions by Putin's Russia sure seem to live down to that motivation.

So far claims the US sabotaged Nordstream have had plenty of talking but little evidence. The USA may have done it but so could gave Russia or some other nation. Also don't forget while the USA can and has lied or broken agreements so has Russia-especially under Putin. About a year ago Putin said to both other nations and his own troops his military was just doing training and there would not be a new invasion or war. That was a lie by Putin both internationally and to some of his own people internally.

@simkiankiong3599 Actually I'd argue that Putin is relying on legacy support for Russia back from when the Soviet Union supported certain groups in other parts of the world. Putin himself heads a Russia that is increasingly racist, class divided, corrupt (a lot of corrupt leaders like that), and happens to have taken advantage of work started decades before he was in power when pipelines were being built from Russia to Eastern Europe back when the USSR was still around. Putin was lucky that Russia inherited some infrastructure as well as natural resources. By choosing to invade his neighboring nations he has actually diminished the potential of Russia since Russia could have made itself into a bridge between Europe and Southeast Asia. Plus a new generation of Eastern Europeans will hate or be suspicious of Russia for what could be many years now and this builds on the distrust their parents had for the USSR when they didn't like the control Moscow had back then.

Lets look at some of Putin's claims for why he started this war and if they are honest. 1. Nazis supposedly run Ukraine-Nazis hated Jews yet a Russian speaking Jew is currently Ukraine's elected President. 2. Ukraine is not a real nation-Ukraine has existed not just as an independent nation for more than 30 years (something that the Russian government already acknowledged decades ago) but it was officially a "Republic" inside the USSR or Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. 3. He is coming to free Russian speakers-yet a Russian speaker is the current President so they don't need freeing, their votes honestly count so even if President Zelenskyy was not President they still have political freedoms, and in areas where Russian speakers are a majority and already had elected local officials Putin is having those elected officials removed from office and replaced by a list of people he picked-thus Putin is taking political freedoms away from towns he has already occupied in the current war even if those towns are of mostly Russian speakers. Plus there are many photos and videos of Russian troops abusing, stealing from, and sometimes murdering Ukrainian civilians. Bucha was the 1st location where this was found in a sizable way but not the last. Putin's own claims about why he started this war are lies. Western media doesn't have to say that. People can read a transcript of Russian claims made at the beginning of this war and see if that transcript matches the facts-it does not. But if Putin is so good then why do Estonians, Lithuanians, Latvians, Ukrainians, Finnish people, Polish people and more all dislike him. Their nations are geographically closer to Russia than many nations so if Western media was supposedly lying to people about how bad Putin was they would know better because they are close enough to Russia that they can easily travel there and would see or hear of the supposed good things. You complained about Western media but how much time have you spent listening to pro-Putin propaganda?
