I like the idea China will not attack Taiwan. The catch is that Mearsheimer said Putin would not attack Ukraine and we can see how that prediction turned out.

@lukey08 That is both a lie and an excuse. Putin recently gave a speech saying Ukrainians, Belarusians, and Russians are all supposedly 1 people thus should be in 1 nation. Except he doesn't want want to accept the idea Ukrainians are allowed to disagree. Also early into the current war Putin started the dictator of Belarus announced and displayed on a map the notion Poland would be attacked after Ukraine. He probably was not expecting Ukraine to prove Putin wrong like it did-Putin claimed Ukraine would fall in three weeks.. and it still has not happened.

Because Mearsheimer is more interested in his ideology than he is democracy. Doesn't mean he is correct when he claims something. For example, he predicted that Putin would not attack Ukraine. I'll give you two guesses how that turned out.

@cmontes7961 Isn't China going through a recession right now? Also Hong Kong supposedly had a peaceful reunification with a 1 nation 2 systems plan/agreement. And mainland China has been repeatedly breaking that agreement-not something that would encourage others to do reunification.

While not a guarantee either way having a dictatorship rather than a democracy tends to push a nation closer to the bad state end of the range while having a democracy as the form of government tends to push a nation closer to the good state part of the range.

"Russia has a goal to liberate those areas that declared independence" meaning occupy and set up puppet governments that declare vassalhood to Putin while ignoring desires of the population and rigging any referendum results. "Russia finally had enough of ethnic Russians in Ukraine getting shelled" Translation, Putin decided to shell ethnic Russians living in Ukraine for daring to not want to live under him. And no there was not any genocide of ethnic Russians nor shelling of civilians when Putin invaded in 2022. These are lies from Moscow and have been debunked.. debunked for the last few years prior to Putin's latest invasion. "It’s absolutely delusional to say NATO didn’t provoke this war" ironically that comment is "delusional".

@vamoua4036 That thought doesn't change the value of Mearsheimer's predictions. Also it leaves off that for awhile Taiwan was recognized as the "one country"-even holding the Chinese seat at the UN I believe. There was a switch but the switch occurred with talk of peaceful reunification-an invasion is not peaceful. Now I think they should've just done the practical thing and declared the 2 separate nations some time ago as happened with North and South Korea but that didn't happen-too much pride and other things involved at the time.
