Comments by "pplr1" (@pplr1) on "War in Ukraine is the fault of US and NATO | John Mearsheimer and Lex Fridman" video.
As I just said in my own comment I was put off by Mearsheimer spouting falsehoods less than 2 minutes into the discussion. Yes there is evidence Putin planned to attack other nations after Ukraine. Putin also said his war with Ukraine would result in success within three weeks. Just because other nations-especially Ukraine-proved Putin wrong does not mean Putin didn't try or somehow was not planning/hoping to.

2 minutes in and I'm already getting unimpressed by Mearsheimer. No evidence??! The current dictator of Belarus-who has let his nation be used as a freeway by Putin-pulled out a map early in the war with Ukraine and flat out said and showed that after supposedly successfully defeating Ukraine the plan was to attack Poland! Putin may not have the army to successfully take Ukraine but that doesn't prevent him from engaging in wishful thinking and then acting on that wishful thinking. Also Putin sent Russian paratroopers to try to seize an airport by Kyiv. Combine that with the 40 mile convoy of Russian military vehicles that tried to get to the Ukrainian capital but was stopped and it is a good bet to say Putin was trying to topple Ukraine's elected government. Just because he failed does not mean he didn't try. Putin has been prone to overestimating his military's abilities by the way. Putin claimed that attacking Ukraine would result in success in three weeks. As we head closer (a few months away) to marking 2 years since Putin started this war he was proven wrong. But that does not mean Putin did not say what he did say. Now there is some value in the discussions Lex has with people. Even if those people spout falsehoods as I pointed out happened here. When Lex has an interview with someone he lets that person say their piece. They clearly are given a chance to have their say. We the viewers have to double check if what the person said was true or not.

@redshield3296 Some of the evidence Putin was planning to attack other nations came from the current dictator of Belarus-the guy who has been letting Putin use Belarus as a highway and is arguably the closest thing Putin has to a ally from the start of this war. Lukashenko (the current dictator of Belarus) put a map on display early in the current war and said that after Putin was done with Ukraine that Poland would be attacked. Now perhaps he and Putin were expecting an easy win. After all Putin himself said it would take three weeks to defeat Ukraine and-thankfully for Ukrainians' sake and possibly the world's-Ukraine has been disproving him. But even if Ukraine has managed to disrupt Putin's plans it does not change that Putin (at least) had intended to go after Poland.

Who? I saw Mearsheimer say things that were false within 2 minutes of the video. Lex lets people talk and say whatever they want. Its viewers who have to double check things to determine if the things said were false or not.

Do I detect a few excuse makers for Putin trying to side step that the USA has allies by improperly labelling them colonies when their people elect their own governments which decided its own policy-including if to have an alliance with the USA. Reminds me of complaints of NATO "expansion". A way of trying to avoid saying multiple nations wanted to join NATO and did so.

Tell me you are a Russian troll without using those specific words. @slumpmanwum That goes for you too. In a surprise to few Russia lied about what the results of the supposed referendum in Crimea were. This is not a big shock since rigging elections is a relatively common practice inside Russia. There is very little doubt Putin lied about the results of any referendum in occupied parts of Donbas (you seem to forget that Putin has not managed to occupy and oppress all of it.) Also the false claims of genocide were been debunked years ago.

He may try, thus Putin would start another war. Starting wars seems to be a thing of Putin's. And he may be especially angry with Ukrainians for deciding that they will pick their own Presidents rather than let him do it. He and his PR people kick misrepresenting what happened in 2014 Ukraine as a coup because they don't want to admit that what happened is a corrupt former Ukrainian President broke some campaign promises he made, then unleashed security forces on people protesting about it, then got scared and ran off when the backlash from the Ukrainian public began to be felt. A freely elected Ukrainian Parliament declared he had fled the nation and the Presidency. And then Ukraine kept on holding honest elections including electing a couple of new Presidents. If Russians could change who is President in their nation as easy as Ukrainians can that would be a very scary thought for Putin. Putin's preferred elections are rigged. That is why results of the supposed referendums in areas of Ukraine that Russia occupied were so predictable. The proclaimed results would be whatever Putin wanted, no need to list in public what the actual vote count was because how the people in those areas voted was never the point. FYI yes evidence has already come out that the supposed result of the referendum in Crimea was a lie. So I have little doubt that the official (according to Putin) results of supposed referendums in other parts of Ukraine that Russia occupied were also lies.
