"Not every situation is 1938, and not every leader is Hitler" Putin was making excuses for Hitler so it is a good decision to start noticing ways the 2 are increasingly similar.

"reason Russia is doing what they are doing is that nato and us want to put missles on Russian borders" I call bs. Putin got upset when Ukraine was going to make a trade deal with the EU. That means Ukraine would be making its own decisions for its economy rather than Moscow. Ukraine was not able to join NATO, but it could make trade agreements. That and flat out Russian Imperialism.

@cl5619 "Russia’s aggression for territorial control aligns with their security interests." Only if they are Imperialists bent on expanding territory when Putin already had 1 of the largest nations in the world. "There is an imperialist force in the world causing problems, and that country is " Russia. Fixed it for you. The last time the USA used force to try to gain land was something over a Century ago. When it comes to Russian attempts to use force to try to gain land that is right now. Russian officials and the current dictator of Belarus (1 of the closest things Putin has had to an ally since Putin started this war) have already threatened other nations even as this war was going on. Did the Soviet Union claim it was going to attack other nations as North Vietnam and South Vietnam fought? If not then there is a clear difference. Oddly enough Putin may be operating by his own version of the "domino theory". He may be afraid that if people in Ukraine like having honest elections (they do) then at some point Russian people may want them too.

@cl5619 I pointed out you were embracing imperialism with your "main point". I also feel like I already pointed out the Black Sea coast is not Putin's personal property and parts of it have been within other nation's territory for a long time. I Putin wants to be sure he can access the Black Sea then do it through the part that is already Russian and not part of another nation. Also I already suspect I pointed out that Putin, if not stopped, continued invading of other nations that could easily result in World War Three and go into a nuclear war-something that most human beings should be concerned about including American citizens. Helping Ukraine is probably some of the best spent money by the US government in modern times.

@cl5619 "a Military operation that is to directly provide security to one’s own national territory, national borders, is NOT imperialism" That is some heavy duty lying/excuse making for invading another nation's territory when it is was not invading Russian territory nor threatening to.
8
@cl5619 I call bs. Russian government officials have already be threatening other nations even as Russia struggles in Ukraine. Recognizing an Imperialist with desires to attack multiple nations is not "domino theory", it is recognizing the patterns of a group of political elites in 1 nation. Care to explain which nations Vietnam was threatening to attack?
7
@cl5619 "Please tell me how my security as US citizen is threatened at all if Russia takes over the Donbas or whatever they would take from Ukraine." This is just asking why people are bothered over Russian Imperialism since Russia hasn't started a war with their nation yet.
6
"she sounded incoherent when pressed by Dwarkesh on her contradiction regarding Nato expansion to Ukraine" Actually she referred to other nations joining NATO and that they wanted to. Ukraine would like to be in NATO but is not. Though both would like to be free of Russia. Not sure what you mean by "contradiction" here.
5
'are you even going to try to explain the threat “Imperialist Russia” poses to us?' Funny thing. I had earlier today and in earlier in the conversation. Did you falsely report the reply I gave you earlier today I don't see it now but I'm pretty sure I left 1 mentioning how Russia starting WW3 could result in nukes flying and problems inside and outside of the USA. Funny your complaint over "waiting" shows up less than a day after I replied and within a few days of our previous comments.
5
@irynahaddock3132 "Putin didn't mind Ukraine making a deal with the EU." If Putin didn't mind Ukraine making a deal with the EU then he wouldn't have contacted a Ukrainian President to try to pressure and bribe him into pulling back on making a deal with the EU.
5
@dannycorsaro546 It is still there. I recommend not replying until sober.
4
@JimrunNewman Ukraine wasn't in NATO. And Ukraine was neutral in the first place and Russia attacked it anyway. Ukraine wants to join NATO to have allies help defend it. Cuba kept a military alliance with the Soviety Union throughout the Cold War. The Cuban Missile Crisis was about missiles-not if the USSR and Cuba would make an agreement.
3
@dannycorsaro546 Translation: I'm totally correct in what I wrote but you would prefer not to address that.
3
@victorsago Good luck to your nation. I hope you continue to get as much support as before if not more to defend yourselves. I've already contacted politicians in my nation to urge support.
3
"what can I say, if you are gonna rule the world, wich US led west does, then rule it by example" Except he is correct other nations choose to ally with the USA or not. US troops left Iraq when there was no agreement for them to stay and returned only when the Iraqi government invited them. Russia on the other hand tries to invade other nations in the hope of ruling with brute force.
3
@IAT1964 Not in this current war.
2
@zivaradlovacki2666 " is that when USA lied about weapons of mass destruction, went in on that false pretence and killed 500000 children or...?" US lying about WMD in Iraq? If you oppose larger nations invading smaller like the USA invading Iraq then you should be very opposed to Russia attacking Ukraine. The USA killed "killed 500000 children" in its invasion of Iraq? Really?? That sounds like a lie to me. Did it supposedly round up these children in the streets?
2
If only all Democrats knew as much as her. That she didn't show partisanship and you did reveals an amount of paranoia on your part.
2
Most in the US do support Ukrainian, there are a few Putin sympathizers that were trying to sabotage things.
1
Not in favor of war crimes, when it comes to the current war it is pretty clear Russia and Russian troops have committed most of them.
1
"dont pretend to be a hero who came to save innocents from fire you started yourself. Other side is taking lives but your side chose to continue this in hope of weakening enemy using someone else's lives" There are at least 2 lies/misrepresentations here. 1st Putin started this war. The USA did not order Russian troops to try to invade Ukraine, Putin did. 2nd helping a nation defend itself is not merely weakening an enemy. It is helping preserve the freedom of the people in the nation that was attacked-that is Ukraine. If Putin wanted to save lives-both Ukrainian and Russian-he could simply tell the Russia troops to return home. He doesn't. His greed, pride, and Imperialism have been too much for him to do that so far. And if Ukraine surrendered the suffering of Ukrainians would not end. Instead Putin would just try to have Ukrainians killed out of sight and tortured as part of oppressing them rather than fighting them on a battlefield. Yes struggling in Ukraine makes Russia weaker. But that is Putin's choice and he could still end the war next week if he wanted. Putin's greed and pride have resulted in death for others-both Ukrainians and Russians.
1
Oh look Russian propaganda with a dash of Mearsheimer messing up on history. Most people who bring up the Monroe Doctrine online these days don't know much about the Monroe Doctrine. Also Ukraine held honest elections, Russia held rigged elections-it isn't hard tell which is a democracy. Helping Ukraine is cheap compared to World War Three plus is actually in the US interest-and the opposite of corrupt. Funny how the more corrupt politicians seem to be for Putin rather than against.
1
The current war isn't over NATO, that is just 1 more lie. Ukraine wasn't about to join NATO and had not been for several years. If Ukraine had been allowed to join maybe the current war could have been prevented. Though Putin is an Imperialist and they like to start wars so that is only a maybe.
1
@philmarlowe101 I see you have nothing intelligent nor true to say.
1
Many of the Russian people don't want to fight or die for Putin's Imperialism.
1
"I know what it means, but saying such a phrase nonchalantly is insensitive and demeaning to the Ukrainians who have to die on this bloody war." I'd argue the most insensitive thing to do to Ukrainians is to not support them as they fight for the freedom against Russian Imperialism and greed.
1
@youkosm Correct.

@cl5619 "If Russia loses territorial control over the Black Sea coast and that falls into the hands of the US/NATO, the country is toast." Turkey has part of the Black Sea coast and has been part of NATO for a long time. Significant parts of the Black Sea coast do not belong to Russia-even ignoring Ukrainian parts. "Nevertheless, I don’t care who runs the Donbas and Crimea. It’s not my problem… but it is my problem that my wealth is confiscated and then transferred to the Ukrainian government." So you agree with my response to the earlier part of my comment. Good. That said you would have to be a US citizen for it to be your "wealth". Even if you are its a small amount compared to the Federal Budget and a good deal in comparison to increased changes of a nuclear war. So you are making mountain out of a mole hill and over something that is positive for both the US and world in general. "But let’s go a step further… let me accept your assumption that Putin will go further once they win Ukraine… to say, Poland and the Baltic states. Why is that my problem as an American citizen?" 1st, are you an American citizen? You say so but you could be Chinese or Russian for all the internet goes. Now a problem for the world including US citizens (if you are or are not 1) is that attacking more nations like Poland and the Baltic States is an easy way to kick start World War Three. Since multiple nations involved have nuclear weapons this means a possible nuclear war.
1
@cl5619 Putin wants to reclaim the old Russian empire. This isn't "domino theory" but statements made by Putin, Dmitry Medvedev, and the current dictator of Belarus (something of an ally to Putin now). Ukraine is only 1 nation on Putin's list. Some of the other nations on that list are NATO members and an Imperialist Russian attack on them opens the door to nuclear war. That would be bad for humanity (inside the USA and outside). Losing in Ukraine would hamper Russian Imperialism and thus make the odds not quite as high there would be a nuclear war.
1
"tell me a single way putin is doubling down?" Putin is doubling down by repeatedly sending in more troops after the initial invasion attempt stalled.

@zivaradlovacki2666 "well it sounds like you are ignorant because if you were not, you would know that 500000 children died in Iraq during USA and UK invasion" It sounds like you are repeating a lie. Many people have criticized George W Bush for invading Iraq but those criticisms do not include "that 500000 children died in Iraq during USA and UK invasion". I think you are repeating someone else's lies while not knowing what you are talking about (being ignorant). Albright was not even part of the George W. Bush White House. So you have proven you don't know what you are talking about-thus are "ignorant". Now she was Secretary of State during the time Clinton was President but Bill Clinton did not invade Iraq. He was President after Saddam had invaded Kuwait and then been driven out. To repeat there were no invasions of Iraq during the time Bill Clinton was President. Now there were sanctions on Iraq after it invaded Kuwait. And it turned out Saddam's government lied about a rise in infant mortality during those sanctions. But the sanctions were a result of Saddam invading another nation. And even with those sanctions it appears Saddam's government lied about infant mortality as part of a propaganda campaign. Oddly after the George W Bush invasion of Iraq there was a claim that the invasion was a good thing because infant mortality supposedly suddenly dropped. But it seems what actually happened is that the government in charge of Iraq stopped lying about the number of infant deaths. There is an article about this titled "Changing views on child mortality and economic sanctions in Iraq: a history of lies, damned lies and statistics"

"well it sounds like you are ignorant because if you were not, you would know that 500000 children died in Iraq during USA and UK invasion" zivaradlovacki2666 you have already shown you are "ignorant" with this comment. Perhaps you should stop falling for propaganda so much. It seems you fall for it so often that not only do you not know that it is often lies but you don't know which lies are about what. Saddam's government lied about the impact of sanctions-not an invasion since Saddam himself had done the invading and his invasion of Kuwait is why sanctions were put on Iraq. But even if Saddam's government didn't lie (and it often did). That does not change that you repeated some Russian lies during a time of Putin's attempted invasion now (not years ago). The same Putin who is a billionaire due to his corruption and his willingness to use the Russian government to steal from the Russian people and nation. And no, he didn't invade Ukraine to fight off an imaginary Nazi government. President Zelenskyy is not only Jewish but speaks Russian as his 1st language. Putin invaded Ukraine, in part, to topple the elected government of a Russian speaking President. Why did Putin actually invade? Probably a list of reasons. Putin misses the old Russian empire-so this is his attempt to return to Imperialism. Putin probably wants Ukrainian lands and resources-after all Putin got to be a billionaire by being both corrupt and very greedy. And Putin also doesn't like that Ukraine has honest elections while Russian elections are rigged. There may be more reasons that Putin invaded but that trio of reasons is probably very high on the list. So when you repeat excuses for Putin's war of aggression you should remember that you are making excuses for Imperialism, land and resource grabbing, rigging elections, and so on for a corrupt billionaire. Now is that what you really want to be doing? If you were actually concerned about wealth gaps in the world perhaps you would at least consider not supporting a corrupt billionaire as he both tries to enrich himself further and get thousands of other people killed.
1
"First, in politics, objective reality means nothing. Russian perspective means everything, and they see the world through the existential lens." This is either an argument to let Russia lies & propaganda dictate how the rest of the world acts or delusions. Neither are good arguments. Considering that Putin went through another rigged election there is a good chance he knows he is lying-1 of the many things he resents Ukraine for is its honest elections. Now maybe Putin is delusional but such delusions are unlikely to end with compromise.
1
"Western Ukraine has been Russian since the Holodomor" Not just wrong but badly so. Also most people in Eastern Ukraine voted for independence and more there are more ethnically Russian.
