  1. WHAT U.S. GOVERNMENT INVESTMENT CAN DO I'm Australian but went to college in America in the late 80sand did aerospace engineering. January 28, 1986 the Space Shuttle Challenger accident happened. Only 16 days before that is was in Orlando and even at that distance I was able to watch the Space Shuttle Columbia take off. In the aftermath of challenger there was a mountain of calls for NASA to be broken up and privatised. In response the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) commissions an independent report on the VALUE of NASA. To save time they restricted that study to just the Apollo Program which cost $25.8 billion between 1960 and 1973. Adjusted to 2020 that's $257 billion. The AIAA published a summary of that report in their monthly magazine which as student members we all got. We were stunned to find out that the technology spin-offs from the Apollo program had been REPAID to the American people via taxes on profits from American industry at an estimated $9.50 for every dollar spent. Most of that came from American industry using patented materials in manufacturing, patented electronics and computer technologies. Most of the worlds advanced materials, electronics and and computers have significant parts of their history in the Apollo program. Most of the Worlds computing systems have history in the Apollo Program. Things like the Apollo Guidance Computer (AGC) were a major step forward in size, computational power and multi-tasking. The AGC and other computer in the Saturn 5 were not only the worlds first digital engine management systems but the worlds first ON BOARD navigation computers. YES they were crude by todays standards, but without that investment things like the computers in your cars that run the engine would not have been possible. One of the major reasons WHY the famous 1202 & 1202 errors that occurred during the landing phase of Apollo 11 did not cause the spacecraft to crash was because of how fault tolerant the AGC was. In 2018-19 in the lead up to the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 students went back into the operating system of the AGC and found it was MORE EFFICIENT that todays systems. We've become complacent and lazy with todays CPU power and Memory capacities. Who knows what the VALUE returned from NASA is these days considering how much technological development it produces. That AIAA report commented that without NASA the United States would lose its technical advantage. Lets also not forget how much monetary value is generated EVERY DAY form things like the Internet and GPS systems BOTH of which came from US Government investment. WHAT would be the net financial worth of Bill Gates, Elon Musk, Peter Thiel, Suckerberg,...etc or any of their employees if the US Government had NOT invested in computer development, GPS or the Internet????? Sorry you can't claim WiFi, that was the Australian Government.
