AEROSPACE ENGINEER HERE: Emma is in part right but also very, very WRONG on what people mean by sophistication of IEDS. She's RIGHT that they do not have the same level of sophistication as something like HIMARs, but that doesn;t mean they are not sophisticated in other ways. I'm not military but have worked with people who served in BOTH Iraq and Afghanistan and when they said (10+ years ago) that they knew Iran was involved it was because of the sophistication of the IEDs. This is the explanation they gave me. After the first couple of years in Iraq and Afghanistan there was a significant change in the IEDs. Initially they had been crudely patched together explosives. What changed was the packaging and deployment. So instead of just burying a pile of explosives hoping to make a big hole and damage whatever was overhead they started packaging things so that the entire blast went straight up with the aim of doing massive damage to whatever was overhead. They also started burying armour piecing shells in ways they were far more likely to damage armoured vehicles. What they meant by "sophistication" was that people with a knowledge of explosives and armour and military tactics were helping them make MORE sophisticated versions of IEDs.

@maxjoechl5663 Thanks - that's exactly the sort of things these guys said to me. The point they all made was that the changes showed their were people with BETTER KNOWLEDGE of what worked against specific types of targets. They sort of described it in terms that it had gone from backyard/garden shed hobby level up to engineered solutions. FYI - I do know what shaped charges are and other anti-armour technologies. Way back in college I did some work for my professor on the Abrams APDS projectile.

@shadebleu Oh SHlT who knew we had genius in Creative writing to help clarify everything. I'll write slowly cos I know you can't read fast!! She's right in that they aren't using IEDs that are as sophisticated as purpose built Western military hardware. She's totally wrong in that there's been military expertise involved in the manufacturing of IEDs that make them far more sophisticated than those employed in the first few years of the Iraq invasion. Its called nuance, but then a genius in creative writing must surely understand nuance.
