Australian here - you have just described a common problem with Left leaning parties across the developed World. Since the 1980s they have all shifted into the centre with most of their elected people coming from academic backgrounds rather than working class backgrounds. They have not only occupied the centre of politics they also have crept to the right so they can come across as more pro-business and have more economic credibility. This was a lot easier in America because America never really had a Left to begin with like other countries. Australia, Britain and most of Europe have Leftist parties that were formed out of their trade union movements. Hence the name Labor. In America neither the Republicans or Democrats formed out of the working class. Across the World Leftists have this misguided belief that if they drive the Right off to the radical right then nobody sensible will vote for them. NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES this strategy FAILS they keep doing it. The Democrats are the worst of all at this because they often run campaigns in Republican primaries supporting the worst GOP candidates thinking nobody will vote for them. Its gets really bad when the Left become incompetent or ineffective or screw up economically and leave the public with no other option but the radical right. This is what's happening across Europe and sadly here in Australia AND because they are academics they wont listen to anyone.
