No - the more important question is how stupid are the people WHO BELIEVE this nonsense? FYI - I am an aerospace engineer and in 1987 during my final year we had a guest speaker from NASA who had just done a project on what it would take to terraform Mars. We were damn keen to hear what he had to say because even after the Challenger accident we still expected to be build the next space station during the 90s, be back on the moon in the 2,000s and then head onto Mars after that. He started his presentation with "Sorry, but its impossible and here's why." He then explained the "why." The basic problem is that planets are not only massive complex systems they tend to do what they want because these systems have inbuilt inertia and what ever direction they are going in - they tend to keep going in that direction. Its why when I hear people talking about this crap it drives me crazy. Even those who mean well and talk about "geo-engineering" Earth as a way to fix climate change are borderline delusional because they just don't get how hard its going to be. YES we can fix the planet but its going to take a staggering effort and massive exercise in cooperation AND MOST IMPORTANTLY certain recalcitrants need to be told the SHUT UP.

@dys1525 You misunderstand what the words geo-engineering and terraforming mean. Geo-engineering is a PLANNED ADJUSTMENT to a planets ecosphere. Terraforming is a complete re-engineering of a planets ecosphere into something new. BOTH are planned things you do to a planet to get a desirable outcome. What we are doing is NOT planned and we are changing our planet in an undesirable way through a complex combination of accidental outcomes driven by a combination of stupidity, ignorance and arrogance driven by the selfishness of some at the cost of others. Yes is a subtle but extremely important difference.

If you ever get the chance I'd recommend Kim Stanley Robinsons Red, Green & Blue Mars trilogy. Its impractical in many ways but it also gives some idea of the task and consequences and outcomes.

For everyone interested the article Emma quotes is on the Guardian and is titled "The rise of end times fascism Naomi Klein and Astra Taylor" I found it by googling "naomi klein end times elon musk" Its worth reading, but be warned its a long article (over 15 pages). The paragraph Emma reads from starts near the bottom of page 5 of the print out.
