  1. What they could (or should) have done was throw his own claim back at him. They could have said. "Yes Jesus words are fine and fair. Now can you please tells us when we will all live by them?" And then remind him about all those Christians who fought to retain slavery and then enacted segregation laws and to this day gerrymander to disadvantage black communities. There's a famous exchange between Mahatma Gandhi (a Hindu) and a British official where he told the British Official that if he'd agree to live as Jesus described in the Sermon on the Mount the world would be a better place. He basically said "you all claim to believe in Jesus but none of you practice what he said."
