ENGINEER HERE - Some of us have been trying to tell EVERYONE how ORWELLIAN these clowns are FOR YEARS NOW. The number of arguments the rest of the engineering profession has been trying to WARN YOU ABOUT letting these people run wild has lost all meaning. Anytime I have spoken out about this crap I have been abused. FYI - My degree was in Aerospace but I work in industrial control systems, automation & robotics. I am formally trained and certified in multiple areas of SAFETY ENGINEERING. I can explain why the Boeing Max-8 was always going to crash AND BY THE SAME methods its easily explained why this stuff is ALSO DANGEROUS. There is a very distinct difference between something that ACTUALLY THINKS and RESONS on a QUESTION or PROBLEM and something that MIMICS what a person MIGHT CONCLUDE on a question or problem. These AIs DO NOT THINK they are fundamentally algorithms that AVERAGE OUT THE DATA hence the term some have given them - Stochastic Parrots.

@LDrosophila YES - I can't see anyway that these systems can work for the type of stuff these clowns think it will. This has always been one of my bugs with self driving. How does some kid in an office in Silicon Valley know what its like to drive in Australia where we drive on the LEFT side of the road? How would that programmer know what its like to drive on the steep shale roads that you find in New Zealand or the insanely icy conditions in the Nordic Countries. There's some INSANE arrogance in the Silicon Valley concept of "we know what everyone else needs." Its NOT a new concept either. The Romans tired it The British tried it Other nations tried it The Economists have for the last 50 years DONE IT and how THE FARK has that worked out for most of us???

@mildlydazed9608 Yeah - the engineer in BBT was Wolowitz and even when he did the coolest thing ever (going into space) they made him look hopeless. Then when he got back that made it even worse. It doesn't get much better in other shows.

@lisathomas5719 Do you know (or remember) that in George Orwell's 1984 every TV set had a camera watching the room to check on the people to make sure their reactions were what they were meant to be?????????????? We used to think that was sort of far fetched. NOT ANYMORE. The computer you're at right now has a camera pointed at your face unless you block it. Even then there's still the microphone. As well as all the subversive videos you watch like I do. I bet every time the number 1984 is in a comment there's an AI just looking specifically for it.

@mildlydazed9608 YES and NO YES BBT made engineers look like a bunch of hyper geeky nutcases and people have pointed that out. NO because for a change STEM people actually got some airplay. How many other TV shows or films did engineers or any other tech people get anything except token places? Do you remember that awful rendition of I Robot with Will "look at me" Smith? I am a big fan of Asimov's work especially his work on AI. How do you think I feel when that self centre POS Will Smith butchered a book of short stories that are incredibly pertinent to the discussion on AI just for his own self admiration.
