@Bhante Its what happens when ideology overrides common sense. AND it doesn't just apply to energy production it applies to almost everything in our modern world. I'm an engineer with 30+ years of automation and control systems and its so frustrating to see the level of STEM ignorance (as opposed to STEM literacy) that's in public discussion and political policy these days. Sure nuclear power has some enormous and expensive issues that cannot be denied or avoided. BUUUUUT the biggest issue we have are green house emissions. The waste form nuclear energy is vile but its manageable, we have it reasonably contained. Once CO2 and CH4 are released there's no containment and there's no management of the issue. The only solution anyone has that we know works is plant more trees, except we are now cutting down forests faster than ever. Sure nuclear is bad but for this time period its a lot less damaging than coal and a damn heap less trouble to clean up.

It was arguably the moment the green movement showed they had lots to protest over and not a solution among them. The most important thing the world does is decarbonize. We simply must stop bashing the shit out of the planet. Germany had a choice turn of its older dirtier CO2 emitting coal fired power stations or turn off its nuclear power stations. For sure continuing to use nuclear has its issues and adding to the nuclear waste stockpile only makes that issue worse. But taking the dirtier option that only makes the worst of our collective issues even worse was so selfish and so stupid that nobody should ever listen to those clowns again. Because what sort of a solution is it when we dump one pack of stupid selfish clowns only to replace them with another equally stupid and selfish pack of clowns. The world needs solutions not grandstanding clowns.
