I'm Australian and you just described the issue we have had with Indonesia. Why do you think we started our zero tolerance policy? For sure its ugly, and possibly one of the ugliest things we've ever done. But the people smuggling had to be stopped. They were using the oldest and most worn out fishing boats to do the job, which made it insanely dangerous. Most of the boats were barely able to stay afloat. The boat owners never cared if we burned them afterwards. The Indonesian fishermen used their old boats to make money to buy new boats. They weren't the worst people involved. The worst were a handful of Pakistani middlemen who made millions. They ripped off everyone. They ripped off the people they smuggled. They ripped off the Indonesian fishermen. They never cared who go hurt in the process. For sure our policy was ruthless (and still is) but if we didn't they would still be putting people in very dangerous boats and people would still be dying.

@thhanh1003 You are absolutely right. In engineering we have process/technique called Root Cause Analysis (RCA). So what's the ROOT CAUSE of why we have over 60million displaced (maybe more) people on this planet. Could it be the bat crap psycho leaders that many developed nations SUPPORTED as they raped their countries for last few decades? It might just be a thought but maybe if we hadn't been so skull FKD to keep trashing the developed world as we sent them our TV and movies bragging about how good we had it mixed with the reality of how crap they had it that we shouldn't have been surprised when 10s of millions just showed up one day asking to have a better life JUST AS WE ADVERTISED I know its a pretty silly idea.
