I'm Australian but went to college in America (late 80s).
I have been trying to tell Americans they have NO IDEA what an actual Left is.
America NEVER had a party like British Labor or Australian Labor that came out of the trade unions.
America NEVER had a party like any of the European Socialists, Social Democrats, Communists or much else.
America has 2 versions of Right. Basically America has the Democrats who are Liberals and that's using the word Liberal in the American context. Then they have the Republicans who are Libertarians. In very general terms American Liberals believe freedom is best protected by strong government with sound regulations that are enforced by the relevant agencies while American Libertarians believe freedom comes from minimal government with minimal oversight.
One of the main reasons others find American politics baffling is there's a lot of overlap between the Democrats and Republicans. This is where you get the Line about being "Fiscally conservative and socially Liberal."_ They both believe in American exceptionalism and that America needs to dominate the world economically. Barrick Obama actually said his economics was the same as Ronald Reagan's.
One area where they differ is religion. The Democrats are generally tolerant of other beliefs and Republicans are NOT.
The best description of the Libertarian mindset is this quote by Milton Freidman the infamous economist who won the FAKE Nobel prize. He said "Government has three primary functions. It should provide for military defense of the nation. It should enforce contracts between individuals. It should protect citizens from crimes against themselves or their property. When government-- in pursuit of good intentions tries to rearrange the economy, legislate morality, or help special interests, the cost come in inefficiency, lack of motivation, and loss of freedom. Government should be a referee, not an active player."
The closest America ever had to something the rest of the world might recognise as a Leftist party was Teddy Roosevelt's Progressive Party, popularly nicknamed the Bull Moose Party, but that died in 1920. It sort of lingered on as a minor party in California until the 1960s. (See Wikipedia).
I actually think that if Andrew Yang and a few others got together and went and re-started the Bullmoose Party he might find a lot of support if he got the messaging right. They could do a Liberal version of what the Tea Party did and attack the Democratic Leadership from the inside.
