Dr. Michael Osterholm (director of CIDRAP based at the U. of Minnesota) said in one of his podcasts before Delta emerged that this virus was NOT doing the sorts of things that other viruses like flu did. He pointed out that it wasn't linked to the seasons other than in colder weather people were more likely to be indoors breathing each other's air. The other thing he pointed out that COVID doesn't seen to die out in the population between waves. He basically said that once established in a population it lingers between waves just waiting for an opportunity to surge again. His often repeated description of COVID is that we are not taming this tiger we are riding it and it will do as it pleases. So none of us should be surprised that we have had to change tact.
