I'm Australian and ole enough to remember when Ken Warby did what he did. It actually caught everyone by surprise because nobody thought this guy could actually do what he did. I remember in seeing a doco on the whole thing and one for the things nobody could believe was how little of the boat was actually in contact with the water at speed. I think it was something like 18 inches but can't remember if that was length contact area. I remember that he had to stop one of his attempts because another boat had driven through the area before the run and despite the lake looking like glass there was still these tiny residual ripples that upset the boat. It was apparently so close to the edge of taking off that almost anything could set it flying. I always thought he might have been exaggerating that a bit, but looking back at it now its amazing what he did and maybe even more amazing that he lived.
