Probably they like the idea that the race lasts longer than the sprint to the 1st corner. or maybe They like the idea that their driving ability is more important than the engineering geeks in the lab. FYI- I am an engineer and I do think F1 is no longer a sport. Its a technology competition thanks to my fellow engineers.

As an Australian thank you so much for recognizing the fact the Chevy SS was one of ours. The other Australian car that we sold to America out of that stable was the Holden Monaro rebadged in America as the Pontiac GT. The story behind how that car existed at all is worth an episode. It was reviewed on Top Gear several times and always to rave reviews. And a second episode should go to its its incredibly rare 427 variant. YES America we built a 427cui Pontiac GT. Only 2 were built and they finished 1st and 2nd in the 24hr race at Bathurst. So they had both speed and endurance in buckets. For the uninformed - Bathurst is what you'd gate if you crossed Pikes Peak with Daytona - a sacred mountain to motor sport, except its a circuit not a hill climb. But we built 2 (very sadly only 2) of the 427 Pontiac GT, which I think you Americans would have loved. Its one of the saddest "what ifs" in Australian motoring history.

All these years later and this is all there is on Wikipedia 1 sentence -> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devel_Sixteen I know its only Wikipedia but that means either nobody cares enough to even put up a photograph or information is being suppressed.

@jasonu3741 Good points. The downforce might be anything but its a valid point. Its one of the things they have to be very careful with for racing tracks where the cars have high downforce like F1. Effectively the cars act like black smith hammers on the track surface. They not only put down a huge load but do it at very high speed. On the tires, they do have special tires for high speed sports cars. I know a person who owns a Jag XJ220 and the tires on it cost a fortune because they are rated to something like 250mph. I did suggest that he get a set of wheels made up that he could put more standard Pirellis on for just normal street driving and save the specials for track days.
