HEY STEVE - How many time on the podcast did I try and tell you Elon was a BULLSHlT ARTIST. REMEMBER I am an aerospace engineer by degree. Elon was never the Chief Rocket Engineer at SpaceX just like he was never Chief Engineer at Tesla. He was unbelievably lucky with timing when he started SpaceX. There was a plentiful supply of very talented and very capable people who were frustrated with everything going on in the space launch industry. They knew they could build better more efficient rockets if they had the right backing. Gwynne Shotwell was and her team was fantastic at their job. I know there is criticism of her and that team but if you actually compare what they have done with the Falcon Series and Crew Dragon compared to Boeing and Starliner then you will understand WHY I KNOW they have done a good job. Elon claiming he was the "Chief Rocket Engineer" is like me claiming I was chief engineer on any of the mining projects I have done in recent years when in fact I was just one of several hundred engineers making complex systems work. I know I did good work on those projects BUT SO DID MANY OTHERS. Elon is just an attention seeking sociopath who's real talent is gathering capable teams and then CLAIMING their work for himself just like he did claiming he was a world class gamer.

Go see my reply to Steve. FYI - I am an aerospace engineer by degree.

@ProfSteveKeen And to give you a further read on how stupid that launch platform was. I checked the mass flow rate out of the engines. Its over 30tons per second at supersonic speed. So for those first few seconds it was similar that pad being hit by a school bus at Mach 2 EVERY SECOND. That's why hefty chunks of concrete were thrown 100s of meters. AND IT WAS PREDICTABLE. Don't forget that one of the more recent launches were Starship went into confetti mode they had to divert a bunch of commercial airflights before they got showered in debris. Elon Musk's genius is convincing other people he's a genius.

Yeah the data issue is just starting to come to light and when the American people find out how badly their privacy has been violated when the 4TH Amendment says "NO YOU CAN'T DO THAT" is going to get damn scary because they are not going to react well.

@Splattle101 I'd agree with both points accept Elon has also done a couple of fantastic things. 1) He shook the automotive industry out of its normally lethargic state and made electric cars a REAL THING. Yes his actual input to the car was minor and in some cases stupid. Common Sense Skeptic covered this in a recent video where he highlighted Martin Eberhard's law suit against Musk and showed the court filings, which includes what Musk actually did to the car. Yes as a vehicle engineer he sucks BUT overall his shake up of the automotive sector is a NET POSITIVE thing. 2) And I sort of covered this. The aerospace industry also needed a c shake-up. Too many companies like Boeing, Lockheed and others had learned how to MILK NASA like a cow. That's one of the significant reasons why we haven't gone back to the moon. Scott Manley did a great video on the SLS system part of the Artemis program. Its a project management disaster with 2 SEPARATE PROJECT teams working on it. Not only doe sit double the cost but the constant changes each team makes and unmakes just delays and delays and delays anything getting done. In fact SLS is a way better example than Blue Origin of trying to get perfection instead of doing things.

@Splattle101 That all said Elon is a without doubt a serial liar and scammer and that's what is so disappointing. If he wasn't so obsessed with attention and just let the good stuff do the job and GIVE CREDIT to others who deserve it then he'd be doing great. PLUS if he'd stay the FARK out of things like the government and economics where he clearly doesn't understand anything then people would not be throwing crap at him.

@ProfSteveKeen Steve its not that the fuel tanks were vertical or horizontal its that they were that close to the launch pad AT ALL. Go look at the aftermath photos from Starship 1 and look at the damage the fuel tanks had. TRY and FIND where the fuel tanks are at Kennedy????? FYI - I am not only FORMALLY trained in BOTH safety engineering and explosive gas & dust mitigation BUT CERTIFIED IN BOTH. I was very lucky because BOTH my trainers were World class subject matter experts. One of the biggest mistakes people make with ALL FUEL TANKS including diesel is the main danger is NOT when they are full but when they are less than 70% full and close to empty can be lethal because that's when you actually have explosive levels of gas & vapour inside the tanks. AND YES I HAVE HAD THESE ARGUMENTS with other engineers on mine sites especially with diesel. Once a diesel tank is 50% empty its a damn serious threat in the Pilbara. Because of the high temperatures it boils of the more explosive fractions in the diesel and that vapour space includes outside air that's bee drawn in through the vent. I loth day I am proven right and one of them pops because for anyone nearby its going to be a horrible day. ALSO one of the GREAT LIES of Hollywood are exploding pipe lines. To have an explosion you need fuel + oxidiser and an ignition source. All that's in a pipeline is fuel. There is NO air in a gas or oil pipeline. That's how we all know Nord Stream was sabotage. We also know that because of the water depth it was the Americans. Nobody else has that skill set. You need to realise this is stuff I am formally trained and certified in AND those are WORLD CLASS qualifications. I'm not an interested person with an opinion I have the certificates to give evidence in court. My trainer in safety engineering was not simply an expert he was "THE" expert on the subject. At the time (2007) he was the lead advisor to Homeland Security in America because post 9/11 they started to look at vulnerabilities and he was the go to guy on securing the energy grid, nuclear power stations and other major high risk facilities. I know how you feel when main stream economists give you flak because I get the same from other engineers. They hate that I have the qualifications and expertise I have. I can't put it on my resume anymore because it keeps me unemployed because the idiots in HR think I'll cost too much. Its already hard enough being an engineer these days with all the influence of economists. Do you know that all the energy reports here in Australia are by economists. Chris Bowen the energy minister and his opposite Ted O'Brien had a stupid fest of staggering proportions on TV recently. The only people the media interview on energy are economists. NOBODY has asked 1 engineer what we should be doing. WE ARE NOT EVEN ALLOWED TO SPEAK. That's where the frustration is coming from. Right now I am almost unemployable because of economists.

@Healthguard-j8b Apollo went from nothing to on the Moon in less than 10 years.

@philipoakley5498 Great comment and excellent point.

@aminaakhan2374 Well you do know that fundamentally greatest does NOT actually mean BEST. The base meaning of great is "big" or "larger" and Elon is certainly larger in a few ways.

AND BY THE WAY Please DO NOT tell engineers how to do their job. How SpaceX built Boc Chica was beyond STUPID and RIDICULOUS. YEs the "chopsticks" are very clever and innovative, but the rest of that site is RIDICULOUS. A site that DANGEROUS would never be allowed in ANY OTHER INDUSTRY. They were insanely lucky they didn't wipe the entire site away with their first launch. There's a list of sound and sensible reasons WHY the FAA tried to shut it all down starting with the stupid and idiotically designed launch pad followed by the proximity of the fuel storage. I know you mean well BUT you have no idea or experience OR TRAINING to be making some of these comments. If you didn't pick it up form the first comment let me be clear. I am a big fan of Gwynne Shotwell and her team who produced the Falcon and Crew Dragon systems, but I can't stand Elon Musk and his attitude.

@Jebediah1999 Go look at his Wikipedia page and look at the last paragraph under the section "education"

@ProfSteveKeen Go watch the latest Prof G Markets with Scott Galloway and listen to what his sidekick Ed says near the end.
