We have the same problem here in Australia, except its industrial nut farms. Nut trees need water no matter what the conditions are. Because we now how a commercial water market, that DW actually covered really well, the industrial nut farms can simply outbid all the other farmers. This story is so painful to watch, because I know from our problems how much damage this is doing. I've also seen similar stories about the industrial farming in Southern California where they are having similar problems draining the Southern California aquafer. Its starting to draw in salt water from the ocean.
