I'll go out on a slight limb here. If the Australian Republicans do as they did last time and be stupid again then the rest of Australia will tell them the same message and by that I mean having a highly politicised President like America does. On the other hand if we simply dropped "the Queens Representative" from the job description of the Governor General and simply replaced it with "the Representative of the People of Australia" AND changed nothing else not even the label of Governor General to President. It would pass in a blink. Maybe the one thing we could change is that all official appointments sworn in by State Governors and the Governor General are to be made public beforehand. We could call it the Scomo rule.

Its not the monarchy its the office. Like all official appointments, irrespective if they are by popular election or some other systems, its means nothing if its not respected. The GG should've been stood down for the simple reason he did something of SERIOUS public interest in secrecy.

@peteranderson7487 I am Australian and was here when it happened. What you have said is only true in one part and that was the problem. For every person who wanted one thing there were 3 others who wanted something different and a 4th person who wanted to keep the queen. Howard was smart in how he asked the question because it got the result he wanted making it a shitful waste of time and money.

@chrisknight9682 What I worry about and what I think the main reason it failed last time are the people who want to make expansive changes. Its too easy in that sort of situation to sneak in things nobody realises are there until its too late. Its why most referendums fail. People start pointing out the little details and what's motivating or behind those details. If you look at the role of GG its not broken but it has flaws as Scomo proved. But flawed doesn't mean broken. Fix the flaws. Don't try and fix what isn't broken.
