They rely on the simple concept that people like to think they are smarter than they are and if you give them information that the rest of us don't know about it REINFORCES that. This is why its so hard to convince people other wise. They then have to admit they were tricked or they were wrong or they just aren't as smart as they think they are.

@chriswilkinson7636 I forget who it was and it might have been Thom but they had an author on who'd done a similar book but more on the psychology of WHY people follow conspiracies. Just watch the arrogance they talk with and you'll see it. There's a channel called Scimandan. He's a Brit who debunks flat earthers and other nonsense people. Its staggering how much nonsense is being promoted. I think a lot of them KNOW its BS but they make money from the advertising on social media or sell merchandise.
