Yeah Imagine if they'd had a fleet of these against the B-17s of they'd had these protecting their bombers during the Battle of Britain. When you consider how successful the P38 was its amazing it was the only twin engine fighter that was widely adopted.

@generationkilled Great reference but the Uhu was actually the 219 not 217 -> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heinkel_He_219 And the Uhu really was a "whatif" and if anything British Bomber command, who lost so many crews, were blessed to not lose more if it been produced in any effective number. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fowOHJRDl14

@southerneruk Yeah I get the point but the Mosquito wasn't conceived as a fighter even though their were fighter versions of it built. I just saw this recently on the DH Hornet -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8RMaEs6Npg On the P38 in Europe I don't think its fair to say it wasn't successful its just that it wasn't anywhere near as successful as it was in the Pacific. That may have to do with the fact the P51 was so good in the long range escort role in Europe. Even the Spit lacked the long range of the P51. The main difference being the wing, which they did try and adopt with the Supermarine Spiteful -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlPTskU5ZzY

@donjones4719 Also remember the P38 was most noted for its work in the Pacific where its range was its most important feature. Just yesterday I saw a video on a version of the F86 version that only 2 prototypes were built. Its was a long range version for potentially escorting long range bombers. The early jets were all short range and as the later stages of WW2 had shown they needed some fighters with long range. If you actually have a look at it the Spitfire had its moment in the battle of Britain and then after that its impact on the rest of the war was far less because of its short range. The P51 had a far more important role because of its long range. The Pacific involved a lot more long range. Europe was a single landmass while the pacific was island after island. There's also a couple of videos on the British twin engine fighters. They had various engine supply issues despite also having good performance. There was also a single seat version of the Mosquito that was used as a straight up fighter. So its not like others tried. It was as you put it supply issues but I think that also combined with why the P38 was built the way it was. It was purpose built for long range.
