  1. I'm Australian but went to college in America in the late 80s. I could see this stuff back then, it just wasn't so aggressively "in your face" as it is now. People forget that since the end of WW2 Hollywood has pumped out an endless stream of how America saved the world movies. Then there's all the comic book hero's who are mostly defenders of America and American ideals. There was the super cringe speech in the film "Independence Day" where the President rouses the troops with "It wont just be our day it will be the whole World's Independence Day." Don't get me wrong. I do think America is an amazing country with amazing people, but that doesn't mean its perfect. There are some things about America I wished Australia would do like college sport. BUT I wished we had told America to shove off with things like the neoliberal economics we adopted. Other than privatising everything and sending all our manufacturing to China, one of our biggest disasters was restructuring our water markets. It was all done by an Australian economist who went to Harvard. It now works just like the Texas power grid, which was also done by another Harvard economist. Worst of all we also now have our own version of Australian exceptionalism where we treat the smaller surrounding Pacific nations and lesser developed parts of Asia like crap. That's now coming back to bite us.
