I'm Australian but went to college in America (late 80s) and its utterly stunning to see how far America has slide down this slope of beating the constitution to pieces. I did engineering but a bunch of my frat brothers were pre-law and we had lots of discussions on what could and could NOT happen in America. I had studied Orwell in high school (both Animal Farm and 1984) and won of the key themes Orwell pushed was - If your not careful ANY country cab fall into authoritarianism. He wrote in 1984 in 1948 and had seen Hitler and Mussolini democratically elected to power. He'd seen Stalin strip away everything the Russian Revolution stood for. My frat brothers used to argue that it could never happen in America because of the constitution. They were 100% assured that NOBODY could ever get away with the sort of stuff that had happened in other countries because things like the 1st Amendment would guarantee that it would be exposed. Who would have predicted back then that by now that American politics would descend to this point where they would simply ignore reality. Just as scary is how this is also happening in other countries. Australia has people like this being just as ridiculous. We even have a billionaire trying to buy his way into power - Clive Palmer who operates like he's a Trump clone. I was in Canada a couple of years ago for work and it was the same there. The only difference is how loud they are. In America they are simply louder and better funded.
