As an engineer I usually win the AI arguments with the software clowns by asking them a very simple question. What is thinking and how do you write the algorithm for it? All that they have right now are stochastic software engines that basically calculates the "average answer" based on a data set. The difference is the amount of data they are based on is huge and the replies aren't simply the average number from a group of numbers. The answer is a data set that describes and average answer from 1,000s and 1,000s of related data sets. Hence why some people are calling Chat GPT a "stochastic parrot." No brain no thinking just the average answer to whatever its asked.

@Forsworcen You don't program do you? If you did you'd understand. I work in control systems which are the computer systems that read sensors, make decisions based on that data and then actuate things in the real world. Its what I have done for most of the last 30+ years and a lot of that has been automation and robotics work. I can tell you quite simply for a fact that most of the AI people are only saying AI because of the response it gets from the rest of society.

@dolltron6965 Your still not getting past the reality that neural nets are just mathematical models of the AVERAGE answer to the problem they are trained on. They just allow for more complex answers than a single equation. The best description I have heard yet on things like ChatGPT is "stochastic parrot" and if the bulk of information the parrots is fed is nonsense then the parrot will just regurgitate nonsense.
