That's the truly odd thing about America. They spend an incredible amount of money for poor outcomes. For that amount of money they should be the healthiest nation on the planet by so far they shame the rest of us. I'm Australian but went to college in America (U. of Illinois). So I have a personal interest in how my friends are. I have watched what's happened in the region where I went to college. Illinois Indian and Wisconsin have a combine population almost identical to Australia. Australia has 945 COVID deaths while Illinois Indian and Wisconsin have have a combined total over 48,000 COVID deaths. Yes I know the geography population density and other issues comparing Australia to Illinois Indian and Wisconsin BUT nothing really explains that difference. Australia did get lucky during that initial phase. We didn't have or cancelled major events just in time. Europe and America had all sorts of stuff going on that involved large crowds in packed spaces still going on as it arrived.

@scifirealism5943 Having spent time in America I'm well aware that's one of the main factors but not the only one. But it goes further than that. Americas punitive damages system is another major factor as it pushes insurance through the roof and those insurance costs end up getting paid by consumers. I did aerospace engineering and that same system ruined the American aircraft industry particularly light aircraft like Cessnas. There's always the question why do Cessna (and others) still build the same planes they built decades ago and the answer is the insurance on a new design costs too much. So all they do is modify what they have. I seriously believe if they limited the damages for medical accidents NOT wanton negligence but genuine accidents and they do happen. Doctors cant do miracles and people do die. But I believe if you just limited the punitive damages then the insurance costs would drop dramatically and than would help immensely. Whether or not Americans would give up their right to sue for all hell to get cheaper health care is a question I can't answer. 🤷♂️🤷♀️

@iamdanyboy1 Good points and its driven by the fact America runs a "for profit" health care system not a "for health and well being" system. Don't misunderstand that. I do believe all those WHO WORK in health care have a right to make a decent living. That's just simple common sense. I honestly don't care how much money they make so long as they aren't hurting people or society as they do it. That goes for all corporations and even billionaires. I don't have a problem with Jeff Bezos being worth what he is BUT when he does it by paying minimum wage and forcing neo-feudalism on his workers SORRY BUT NO THAT's A PROBLEM. When corporate profits, shareholder dividends and executive bonuses are put before the welfare of the population then its a problem that only goes one way. Here's one of Amazon's early major investors talking about it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2gO4DKVpa8

@crimsonjynx5707 Yeah I get ya. America's becoming this incredible contradiction of being brilliant and catastrophic at the same time. It swings wildly between those who have and those who don't. On health care ours has developed into a dual system of public and private. It can always improve but I'd take our system over almost any other. Our public system does have some major issues with services outside major cities and with mental health services in general. But in terms of all the basics its damn good. Every so often the private sector wants to push the public out and its gets met with howls of "Look at America" every time. Even our most rabid far right pro-privatization politicians WONT touch it, because even the dumbest among them know how we'll react.

@user-ib9bk7nq6s Your partly right but have missed one giant issue. For those who can afford it American Health care is second to none. But for those who can't afford it American health care is a nightmare. No other developed western nation has that disparity.

@scifirealism5943 Are you even trying to suggest that health care isn't a basic human right? To many people including myself that's not even debatable. Individual by individual there might be some extraordinary circumstances where that does not apply, but those would be incredibly rare. Healthcare is a basic human right and if you can't see that then you seriously need to re-evaluate yourself.

@scifirealism5943 WTF??? I think you meant the "not" instead of "no"???
