  1. I'm an aerospace engineer who works in industrial control systems, automation and robotics. NOTHING Elon has ever said about self driving cars made any sense. If you ever get the chance to talk to experts in what we call vision systems which are the camera systems we use to recognize parts or do inspections, then those people will explain just how hard that stuff is. You need things like controlled lighting and aspects of target objects that are readily identifiable. Go and watch the TED talk on when they tried to teach AI how to recognise fish to see how easy it is to screw that up. Once you realise what it takes to get a camera to flawlessly recognize what's in front of it under any lighting or background compared to what the average human can do then NOTHING about self driving cars makes sense because just getting them to do the basic task of identifying what's going on about the car is impossible with current technology.
