There actually are people doing those sorts of projects out in desert locations. The problem is they are all underfunded. The problem is Elon has gotten insanely lucky with his timing a couple of times. Getting into PayPal right when that sort of system was needed. Getting into Tesla when all of the hard development work had already been done. Picking up some disgruntled but super talented aerospace engineers to start SpaceX and then NOT interfering with them as the developed Falcon.ng Starship is going to break him. He got lucky and sold off his Hyperloop business to a pack of gullible clowns, but he has no one to sell off Starship too. Who's going to buy it? After all he's spent he still hasn't had one fly into space yet, let alone go to the Moon or Mars. He's very rapidly approaching the point where instead of helping further space flight and exploration to where he's wrecking it by wasting time and money.

@SimplestUsername yeah I'd agree on your Tesla assessment so long as you realise the real development had already been done. His real contribution was the marketing, which I have to acknowledge is brilliant. He's one of those rare people who can say almost anything and convince people its magic. He's like the prince charming type who can walk up to any girl and tell her she looks fat in that dress and she just giggles back at him. Elon's similar in that he can stand in front of a crowd tell them obvious BS and they just go yeah. Look at the share price of Tesla. I saw an analyst compare it to other car companies earlier this year and its completely ridiculous. But then its like a few other tech shares that have insane values despite no dividends being paid. People are not investing in returns they are investing in concepts and we all know how that went with Theranos.
