Circa 2010 professor Robert McChesney (U. Illinois) was in Australia (where I am). I saw the second 2/3 of a lecture he gave on Australian TV about the state of the media. He was prominent in the 2004 documentary "Outfoxed" about Rupert Murdoch's war on journalism. He spoke about a huge swap in the ratio of journalists and public relations (PR) that happened between the 1950s and early 2000s through commercialisation. The numbers of PR massively increased while the number of journalists collapsed and the ratio flipped from 5 :1 to 1:5. Journalists who used to gather information through research (investigations & interviews) went to people who just gathered what the PR people gave them and pump out the stories. Fact checking became a waste of time compared to the demands for pumping out the next story. People like Matt Ferrell and many others are just channels for PR people to push what their bosses want pumped into the airwaves. This is exactly the sort of stuff people like Robert McChesney were trying to warn the world about when they made "Outfoxed."

@scottthewaterwarrior Milton Friedman - "There is one and only one social responsibility of business–to use it resources and engage in activities designed to increase its profits so long as it stays within the rules of the game, which is to say, engages in open and free competition without deception or fraud." The problem is most people hear nothing after the word "increase it profits". But even then Friedman is utterly FOS because its mindless to think that any business can keep growing for ever. We live in a finite world. Friedman was one of history's most overrated clowns and look at the mess we now have.

So said the same sorts of clowns with Theranos and how did that turn out????????? How many times have we seen over decades, some clown of a journalist with ABSOLUTELY ZERO understanding of technology hyping the crap out of some technology that never went anywhere. Sooner or later we need to not only make fun of these BS artists but actually front them up publicly as in get right in their faces and out them for the clowns they are.
