ENGINEER HERE: Just adding to this. The basic C + O2 -> CO2 equation when we put in the weights is the problem. Carbon has an atomic weight of 12 and Oxygen 16 and that scales. So when you add up the weights you get 12(C) + 32(O2) -> 48(CO2) and that works for kilo's and tons as well as atomic weight. So for every ton of Carbon we burn IRRESPECTIVE of its as coal or any other Carbon compound we get 3-2/3 tons of Carbon Dioxide for every tone of coal consumed. So when the Chinese burn 3 Giga tons of Coal in their power stations it produces 11 Giga tons of CO2. Plus for most of the 90s and early 2000s the Chinese burnt as much coal in the ground as they did in power stations. Plus the Americans, Europeans and others burn just as much and its pretty easy to see where that 50 Giga tons a year comes from. And for the non-metric people 1 Giga is 1,000 times a million which is also called a billion but giga sounds better.. SO - Yeah Carbon capture is essentially a scam and wont even come close to what's needed in the time frame we need it done. We are now entering a phase of MANAGING our way through what's coming to the planet and the problem with that is the same people who have denied climate change are the same people who want to control that process as well.
