@JacobiMeyers-z1y There's actually a bunch of similar quotes like that. Von Clausewitz had a bunch like "War is the continuation of policy with other means." He also said "war is not merely a political act but a real political instrument, a continuation of political intercourse, a carrying out of the same by other means," There's web pages dedicated to discussing it. There are people in the military who make careers out of discussing these things.

Peter has also said MANY TIMES that the Russians also see this as a fight for their national existence. AND THAT makes this a profoundly dangerous situation. Its made even more dangerous by the opportunists who see this as a way to make money.

@GaryAJMartin You are absolutely right except that dirt provides the plants that provide food and those plants ALSO take the carbon dioxide we breath out and put back the oxygen we breath in. From dirt comes life and the means to sustain it and that's why people have fought over dirt since the dawn of civilisation.

@GaryAJMartin Agreed and some of those specific bits of dirt have the stupidest myths that somehow become things to kill and die over. The Ukrainians need to let go of part if not all of Crimea. It was never really part of Ukraine it only became part of Ukraine during the Soviet era for administrative reasons. There's parts of the Donbas that are similar. BUT THEN the Russians ALSO need to do the same thing and get their noses TF out of a number of places. They also need to realise that Stalin swapped groups of people about to create these enclaves. It was part of the Soviet system to break up cultural links to certain regions. Putin knows this and has spent the last 20 years fermenting all sorts of stresses in those places.

That is kidnapping thing is going to end up the worst PR in Russian history. I saw the interview the Russian Minister gave a few weeks ago and she did the classic "Its not what you think" standard political reply. When they were the Soviet Union and did all that bat crap crazy stuff it was ostensibly to their own people. BUT they let all these other states become SOVEREIGN nations and what they used to do no longer applies. Putin and the clown brigade around him think they are going to reclaim a Soviet Empire that he himself once described "Whoever does not miss the Soviet Union has no heart. Whoever wants it back has no brain." We really are stepping into dangerous times.
