  1. I absolutely agree with you. Peter needs a lot better advice on engineering subjects than he's been getting. I did a degree in aerospace but work in industrial control systems (PLCs & DCS) and automation. I'm also certified in functional safety. I haven't done a lot of oil & gas as I mostly work in mining and water treatment these days, BUT what you have said makes absolute sense. I do a lot of risk assessment work and identifying key items is part of that. I don't know the exact items you are describing, because my time has been limited to gas plants but I know that things like oil refineries do not like being shut down and can be a monster task to get re-started. In my Functional Safety course we covered the Piper Alpha accident and that type of offshore platform normally takes a month to restart after an emergency shut-down. Its not the only area where shutdowns can be difficult to handle. I have been saying similar things about energy grids in recent years. These are big complex systems and if the wrong thing goes down the entire system goes down and doesn't come back easily. Water treatment plants can take days to get stabilised, in the meantime you just pump water from nowhere to nowhere.
