  1. We have very similar issues in Australia. FIRST - fire is a natural part of all forest environments and many species of plants and trees REQUIRE fire to germinate. We have a number of plant species that can't germinate unless the fire gets hot enough to crack the seeds. WHAT'S CHANGED is the size and ferocity of these fires caused by fuel build up AND how often we have bad fire seasons. Its not just mismanagement its a combination of factors. What climate change does is amplify the natural swings between wet and dry conditions. When its wet its really wet and when its dry its really dry. After years of drought we had the wettest of wet years in Australia, while Europe where its normally wet had the driest of dry summers. So here in Oz we should also expect incredible growth in the next year or 2. When the next drought comes it will dry all that growth out and build a massive fuel load. Combine that with another of our issues - being able to burn off safely and we have trouble ahead. The "Goldilocks" period when we can set things on fire because its not too damp and also not too dry that our forests are like rocket fuel is getting shorter and shorter. I expect our next fire season or the one after it to be the worst of the worst.
