As an engineer speaking as calmy as I can. Can people like you STOP regurgitating the PR and spin coming out of the fusion community. For the last 70 years they have been saying that fusion was only 20 or 30 years away. Yes there is progress being made but the facts don't indicate ANYONE is near to commercial operations. The ITER project is years behind. The Stellarator which has shown some promise is only experimental. If we really did make the giant push and did an Apollo like approach where a deadline was set then maybe we might see something in the next 20 years. Also don't ignore one of the biggest facts regarding nuclear fusion - its NOT as clean as the proponents suggest. The main mechanism it generates heat is with high energy neutrons and high energy neutrons are among the worst forms of radiation known. high energy neutrons tend to fly off like atomic bullets and in a human those bullets tend to smash DNA and that either kills cells or causes cancer.

@emceeboogieboots1608 Then they should know better than to spruike maybes as if they were fact. There are plenty of people in the fusion are NOT making grand announcements because they know how sceptical people have become and they know there are enough engineers out there to ask questions.

Don't get me wrong I'd love to see nuclear fusion working and the rest of us building power stations as fast as we can. Its just that I know enough to take these claims with a handful of salt and a bucket of scepticism.

@williambaikie5739 Yeah they have the neutron to an extent. its not the ones they catch I worry about its the ones they don't. And its good to see I am not alone in realising that its not as clean as they claim. But I also know that contaminated parts can be dealt with but that also has to be costed in. if you go look at the clean up of the Sellafield processing site in Britain they started with an insane budget that just kept growing until it got so high they stopped publishing information. its the one thing I find annoying in the cost analysis for nuclear power is they down play the financial costs AND I AM PRO-NUCLEAR. If you do an honest analysis its all but impossible to meet the worlds needs with renewables so we need a low emission base load system. If you run through the options you get back to nuclear most of the time. Not all but most. Lying about or hiding the overall costs is NOT gong to endear the general population who already have next to zero trust in the energy sector. The same goes for the solar people who totally ignore the issues over what happens to damaged or degraded cells. Nobody has a recycling system yet, which has to happen but they are all hoping someone else does it for them. The same goes for the wind people and some of their issues. they are all hoping someone else will solve the problems.

@bpoladsky Go and get a new brain the one you have is malfunctioning. Alex Epstein is nothing but a narcissistic LIAR. He's not a scientist or engineer. He's just another funded by the fossil fuel industry TO DELAY any actions on climate by keeping the debate going round and round in circles. He lists Ayn Rand and Thomas Sowell as influences and they're sociopaths. He worked at the Ayn Rand Institute. As an academic Sowell is a pathetic hypocrite who criticised the scientific community for earning a living as he promoted his latest book. He's praised by few and disregarded by many as a sad pathetic joke. As for Ayn Rand she's a nightmare that promoted being a narcissistic psychopath as a positive thing. She was a maniac and her followers are similar maniacs.

What do all these places have in common. Public discussions dominated by economists, lawyers, charlatans, con men, consultants, greenies AND geopolitical strategists while very one tells the engineers who can fix these problems to go sit in the corner and shut up. There are many things we can do but first of all the rest of the "I have an opinion based on nothing" brigade need to shut up.
