I think you're in part right Peter is underplaying Western provocation, because he places more importance on demographics and resources while Mearsheimer is purely political. Ukraine is complex and there's bits of both. Plus and I have argued this with some of the Mearsheimer fans, Mearsheimer's side of politics (American Realists that also includes the Neocons) have done some nasty shite over recent decades. They all claim Mearsheimer was against the invasions of Iraq & Afghanistan, but they ignore it was his side of American politics who started BOTH. The Neocon ideology came out of U. Chicago where Mearsheimer teaches his "offensive realism" which is one of the most narcissistic philosophies in the history of the planet.
