  1. Not unless its escorted. If you go back to the Iran-Iraq War (1980-88) the Americans and others escorted tankers into and out of the Persian Gulf. Look up the "Tanker War" that's a subsection of the Wikipedia page in the Iran-Iraq War. But Taiwan would be totally different as people would not be protecting their energy supply they'd be blocking a large part of China's energy supply and certain key raw materials.
