AUSTRALIAN ENGINEER HERE ATTENTION ALL Engineers like Simon Michaux have been trying to point out these issues for several years now. Currently Teslas require slightly more than 60kgs of Lithium. There are (according to Wikipedia) 1.5 Billion registered cars in the world and 500 million registered trucks. 1) The amount of energy and production required to fully replace those 1.5 Billion cars exceeds what we currently have. Its not generally well known but MORE ENERGY is consumed in making a car than it consumes 20-25 years depending on how much its used. So to fully replace those 1.5 Billion cars is a massive task in energy and resources. 2) EVEN IF we just re-life all the internal combustion engine (ICE) cars as EVs we need between 80 and 90 million tons of Lithium. Currently the worlds know reserves are between 21 and 26 million tons (See Wikipedia). As Simon Michaux likes to say. "The energy transition isn't impossible, but we need a better plan." WE NEED to as Peter says, spend huge on material science and come up with better solutions and then plan how we implement those solutions.
