Another Aussie here and you're fairly close to my view. What I'd add is that the illegals who do get caught trying to get here consume resources. A lot of them are NOT political refugees they are economic refugees and that consumption of resources means we are NOT spending money on people we should be helping. Part of the problem is that we have advocates who just wont accept the judges decision and just move on. A staggering amount of money and resources is spent on appeals. Those same advocates relentlessly howl we need to discuss the issue but then wont allow anyone with even the slightest counterpoint to be heard. Every person or group of people who have ever emigrated anywhere have arrived with baggage. My Anglo-Saxon ancestors arrived in Australia with Anglo-Saxon baggage and some of that is still haunting our nation today. The real problem with trying to have any sensible public discussion on immigration is there are so many people who will instantly turn it into a howling screaming shite-fest knowing full well what they are doing.

@joythought I think you meant defund not refund the boat operators. Actually they don't care about those boats. One reason why so many of those boats are in bad condition and sink is because they are the older boats that are ready to retire. A boat load of refugees is an easy way to pay for a new boat. Since the money is paid upfront they are guaranteed that new boat even if the one they put refugees onto sinks or is taken by authorities. The whole boat smuggling thing is that insidious.
