What the neoliberals have ever understood is that the majority of human beings have empathy for other people or at least some empathy at some level and that makes them consider their effect on others. Neoliberals are (at their core) Ayn Rand's ideal of "me before society" types. In fact I have seen Yaron Brook the current head of the Ayn Rand Institute argue that "society doesn't exist." According to him its just a construct. Milton Friedman made the claim that "There is one and only one social responsibility of business–to use it resources and engage in activities designed to increase its profits...." and if you put "milton friedman corporate social responsibility" into google you can actually find the FULL QUOTE (like at Goodreads) which is “There is one and only one social responsibility of business–to use it resources and engage in activities designed to increase its profits so long as it stays within the rules of the game, which is to say, engages in open and free competition without deception or fraud” On many corporate websites (like McKinsey) they will put a FULL STOP after the word "profits" to imply that Milton Friedman never said the rest regarding open and fair competition without deception or fraud. Yes Milton said don't be deceptive or fraudulent and they mis-quote him which is at least deceptive.
