  1. The other person David needs to interview on this subject is Barbara F. Walter who is an expert on what causes civil wars. She's done a short TED talk as well as a number of longer talks all available here on YT. One of the really interesting things she talks about are the 2 main identifiers a country is in trouble and possible facing a civil war. Surprisingly neither of those 2 indicators are authoritarianism or economics or populism. The 2 main indicators are. 1) Democracy failing into a condition called anocracy. Its not they become authoritarian it this weird state in between where its still democracy but also ineffective. She explains it better than I can. 2) One or both sides of politics becoming ethnically or culturally ideological.
