Your right but the seeds were planted earlier. This actually goes back right to the end of WW2. Prof Robert McChesney who helped make the 2004 documentary Outfoxed ahs spoken at length about the changes in media. Around 2008 he was in Australia on a book tour and one of his lectures was televised (late one night). For a long time I didn't realise who he was or that he was a professor at my alma mater. Then I saw him on YT talking more about the decline of journalism. What I do remember from his book talk was the shift in the numbers of PR and journalists. In the 1950s it was about 4:1 but over time during the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and 2000s that had gradually flipped and there's now 4 PR people employed for every journalist. What he was pointing out was that most of what we see, hear or read from news services is actually written by PR people. All the journalists do is cut & paste the information they were handed. I'm an engineer and the insanely poor information being presented to the general public by the media is infuriating. Neil deGrasse Tyson spoke about it recently. He's had friends call up and tell him that his most recent interview was total garbage. He has to explain how it was edited and that journalists are in such a rush they don't go back and ask "is this O.k?" Brian Karem is absolutely right there is no journalism because there is no fact checking or vetting.
