  1. Since David brought up Arthur C Clarke everyone should know that among Clarkes book is one called "Profiles of the Future." It had several versions/updates. I read the 2nd or 3rd version back in the 80s as an undergrad doing aerospace engineering. For non-STEM people its probably a difficult read. Its not a novel and its heavy on technical analysis. The book is all about the possibilities and practicalities of technologies imagined in science fiction novels including technologies from his own books, like space elevators. It was really great to read as an undergraduate because it was a series of case studies in how to analyse the practicality of an idea and not just technically but also social impact. Its the sort of book I'd like to bash into the thick skulls of the Silicon Valley "Disruption is good" mindset.
