There are 4 basic techniques for controlling populations that have NOT changed in all of recorded history. I call then the 4 'Fs' of control - Force, Food, Finance and Fear. Force is pretty obvious as its who has the sticks, whips, chains and guns. Food is where you keep the population so malnourished they haven't the strength to fight back. Finance is basically where the Western world is right now and what the Chinese are doing with Belt & Road. Keep people poor and in debt and struggling to earn enough to have a roof over their heads. Fear is the one that's least obvious until its pointed out. At its core its about keeping people scared of something. For most of human history its been done via religion. "Do what the priest says or burn in hell." Its not a Christian thing either as every religion has a version of it. On the flip side is your king who's your protector. What the American Right Wingers do is a different version of it. They rotate through a menagerie of things to keep people scared. The Russians have nukes, the Iranians want nukes, the socialists want your stuff, the liberals want to take your guns so you can't protect your family, the lefties want to indoctrinate your kids,.... The best one is you need guns to protect yourself from the government that your own fellow countrymen & women elected. CRT is just another thing to keep people scared of so that the GOP can play the role of "The Great Protector."

@mwbrada I agree with what you said except there's an odd bit to the racism. Its still a form of control through fear but its a weird version of it. Traditionally control by fear is about losing something. in the religious context its was about LOSING your future in Heaven or one of the other good places like Elysium. The way the GOP play it is the fear of losing what you own through your work. A lot of those GOP supporters have worked hard (no denying that) to have what they have. Then they hear that GOP message: "Those liberals are gonna tax you and take your stuff and give it all to those people who don't wanna work." Yeah its petty and nasty and garbage and done to scare old people, but its also effective. I wouldn't so much call the GOP racist but narcissistic. Adam Tooze the Historical Economist calls them the "The most ruthlessly cynical political operator in the world." What's Trumps most notable trait - racism or narcissism? Narcissists will use whatever they can to climb over people. Trump just doesn't care. If being racist one day helps him he'll be racist. If it doesn't help he'll use something else to scare people. "They're coming for your guns!" "They're coming for your V8 truck!" "They're gonna tax you!" Its still a form of control by fear. Its just a weird form of it. Its not unique to America but the American version is unique because its jacked up by the media and because of the history.

I never said the GOP weren't racist but collectively they aren't the KKK either. WITHOUT DOUBT Trump tapped into that part of the far right who are racist. WITHOUT DOUBT Sarah Sanders is appealing to that element. WITHOUT DOUBT if someone in the KKK votes its for the GOP or something worse. Be less emotional and more analytical about what these people are doing because you wont beat them with emotion or guilt trips. That's how the GOP win - they trigger the Left and the Left go disappearing down rabbit holes. Both Trump and Sanders are being opportunistic scumbags and that's the really shitty aspect to what they are doing.
