You are absolutely right but NONE OF IT MATTERS. So long as Ukraine has a disputed border irrespective of it being with Russia or anyone else, it CANNOT join NATO. Its a basic rule of joining NATO all borders must be settle and not even 1 inch in dispute.

@geraldmeehan8942 You miss the point - Ukraine is NOT part of NATO and can't become part of NATO because of Donbas (its spelt with an 'n' too). There's no treaty for anything. Putin knows it, Europe knows it, Everyone on the planet who's paid attention knows it - there's nothing NATO can do. This isn't like it was in Kuwait 1991. Except that its still about fossil fuel, just this time its about gas not oil. After all the BS of WMDs in Iraq is anyone outside of Washington really going to believe the US State Department or the Pentagon?

@geraldmeehan8942 I just saw a news story a few hours ago and they interviewed Ukrainians on the street and none of them seem all that concerned.

@geraldmeehan8942 Both valid points. No doubt he wants NATO to at least back off. Have you seen Paul Jays interview with Larry Wilkerson on NATO? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fefdgeyNrM

Harold Webb I agree on all of that. The fundamental difference between America, China and Russia is that the American people can get rid of the leadership. I'm actually Australian but went to college in America on a sports scholarship. So on one hand I love the country and its people, but on the other hand I can't stand their politics or their economics. I'm not against democracy or freedom or even capitalism, but I am against extremist ideologies. These days America has this insane ideology that if the top 1% are doing well then everyone is doing well. Its idiotic at best and dangerous if followed and America has been adept at exporting insane ideas like "Greed is good." Your right following America is a lot better than following China or Russia (that's obvious), but BLINDLY following America is stupid, destructive and dangerous.

@geraldmeehan8942 I'm concerned that underneath it all is yet another time America's oil & gas moguls are pulling the strings. They weren't happy about Germany and Nord Stream. 🤷♂️🤷♂️

@qantj You're right they could be in there as well trying to jack the prices up. This stinks of interference. There's nothing to really gain for anyone except gas contracts.

@geraldmeehan8942 Yeah this stinks so much like it did just before Iraq. There was press conference for the US State Dept. last week where a journalist actually did their job and called out the guy claiming they had intelligence. He asked the clown "where's your proof" and there was nothing but excuses. It was telling.

@geraldmeehan8942 Good point on the Russian people. I suspect Putin is just doing a really big sabre rattle just to see how America would react. Not long after the 2016 election I heard a Russian born analyst talk about Putin and his background. One thing with the Russian American relationship is that going way back its had a characteristic like Abbot & Costello or Laurel & Hardy. One guy is the unpredictable lose cannon and the other is the straight man. There were people like Khrushchev who just did stuff and it drove the Americans nuts like with Cuba and missiles. With Trump that couldn't work but with Biden it can. So I wonder if part of this is Putin just getting attention by being a bit unpredictable. Not enough to start a war but enough to rattle the White House.

Harold Webb OK. we all learned something about Russian river naming. Now if we can just get all those boys a some chill pills and they can go for a swim and cool off.

Harold Webb I get the Nord Stream comment but really I don't know if Putin is that stupid. He likes money as much as those GOP * Dem hacks so I doubt he'd want to play games with Nord Stream. It would cost him too much.

@geraldmeehan8942 Thanks back for having a rational discussion.

Harold Webb YES and NO. Yes, absolutely Putin could yank their chain. But the alternative is that the Americans are yanking their chain. It constantly amazes people all over the world how American citizens voice their constant disapproval of Washington. Even Trump called Washington a "swamp.* Yet the same Americans expect the rest of the world to do exactly what Washington says. Maybe you can explain it? Why is the rest of the world supposed to do as Washington says when Americans don't trust anything out of Washington?

@paulrockatansky77 And its actually been those inclusions into NATO of previously pro-Soviet states that's angered the Russians. But then the Russians ignore the fact that the as part of the Soviet era they beat the crap out of those nations for decades. They wonder why those enations are so keen to join NATO- its pretty damn simple. They got free from Moscow and DON'T want Moscow back beating the crud out of them again - DUH.
1
Harold Webb What makes you think I don't know that? Of course Putin can't DECIDE who tries to join or joins any organization BUT HE CAN INTERFERE. And so long as he supports the Donbas separatists and keeps Ukrainian border disputed Ukraine cannot join NATO without a change to NATO's rules. Its absolutely crystal clear nobody can join NATO if even 1 inch of their border is in dispute. Its a NATO rule.

@danielbrown8812 Someone corrected my on the terminology a while back. An Oligarchy is when a very small group control a nation by whatever means. A Plutocracy is when a very small group control a nation specifically using wealth. Its a type of Oligarchy. So when we talk about the Russian Oligarchs they're actually Plutocrats as are people like Bezos, Gates, Suckerberg, Musk, the Kochs, the Murdochs..... The problems aren't just in America either its all across the Western World. I'm Australian but went to college in America so I watch a lot of what's happening in America. And yes I hate that Murdoch (an Australian) is a huge part of the problem. I was in Canada for work a couple of years ago. We get a lot of British and European news here and ITS THE SAME EVERYWHERE. The specific versions might differ a bit from nation to nation but its basically the same stuff EVERYWHERE. Small groups of hyper wealthy people in total control of political parties or the government outright. Putin is apparently worth billions. Saddam Hussein was worth Billions. Most of the worlds dictators are billionaires. Most of the worlds democratic parties are funded (& controlled) by billionaires. Even here in Australia we have our own version of Trump. A true POS named Clive Palmer. I recommend looking up Mark Blyth (prof from Brown) who spoke about "Global Trumpism" and showed how its all across the world and that there's Trump like people on BOTH the LEFT and RIGHT. That's arguably one of the very important points he's made there are Trump like people on the LEFT as well as the Right.
