As an outside observer (I'm Australian) its incredibly sad to see this train wreck unfolding. Sadder still is this was all easily predictable. Its a brutal lesson and one I keep trying to tell Australians we need to look out for because we can do this too. America has never held its elite people accountable. It really started to go bad in the late 1960s. People like Kissinger were NEVER held accountable for things he did like the crimes in Laos and Cambodia that he instigated. Just the other day it was disclosed that Elliot Abrams who instigated and help train death squads in central America in the 80s has YET AGAIN been appointed to a senior government position. NONE of those who actually instigated the illegal invasion of Iraq have ever been held accountable. Yet people prance around these days chanting "Rules based order!" and call for Vladimir Putin to be held for war crimes. TO BE CLEAR I have no problem with anyone wanting to put Putin on trial, but by the same standard so should Bush, Cheney, Tony Blair (Brit), John Howard (Aus.), Wolfowitz, MacGregor and all the other clowns who made the invasion of Iraq happen. When you don't hold people accountable it never ends well. Look at where letting these things go for so long has got America. I'm Australian and we have genuine war crimes on our plate too over some of this stuff.

@johnstallings4049 Sadly I have to agree. For example. Merrick Garland might be an honest man and a good lawyer, but the fact he has put protecting the reputation of the Office of the President from bad press means that Donald Trump has gotten away with ridiculous things. Americans are so quick to howl about the slippery slope when certain subjects on freedom and liberty are raised. How come they never speak about what happens when you put reputation above the Law. Aren't you then on the slipperiest of slopes?

@johnstallings4049 Yes sadly and it needs to stop. I went to college in America and in general I love the place and its people but damn some of the rotten eggs you have need to be dealt with. AND YES - I know we have our problem people too and YES we aren't dealing with them well enough either.
