Actually its closer to the next 24 countries on military spending. In terms of GDP America (~8%) is about 4 times higher than the rest of the Developed World (~2%) on military spending. But then America by itself is about 24.5% of the Worlds total economy. Its that last part why America's divisive politics are now a serious threat the even its closest allies. I'm Australian and like many other nations we now have to seriously evaluate our security and trade arrangements with America. The F35 (which is a key part of our security) has parts made in 46 of the lower 48 states. Some of those states are run by maniacs and we need to consider (no matter what assurances are in place) that we can get spare parts. The same goes for Canada, Germany Japan, Britain and others. America needs to pull some of its whack jobs into line.

@travisgessler6283 Do you think its only an American problem? Its not, here in Australia we have our own versions of bad faith actors like Ted Cruz. We even have our own billionaire wannabe king Clive Palmer. He even ran adds that looked as if they were written by Steve Bannon. Every country's got them, its just they are more pronounced in America. Here's one of the better lectures on populists by Brown U. Prof Mark Blyth. Its from July 2019 so some of the Q&A afterwards needs to be seen in that time, but if you want to get a better understanding of populists and how they operate its a great start. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGuaoARJYU0 If you want to jump ahead there's a great explanation of how politics operates when he's asked about Elizabeth Warren ay 1:20:00.

@VoidDragon82 That's a brutal but also fairly accurate description of American ideology. Let me relate an actual experience I had with American exceptionalism. I went to college there in the late 80s. At the time there was a 3 way treaty between Australia, New Zealand and America. In response to the French sinking the Rainbow Warrior the New Zealand PM David Lange declared NZ a nuclear free zone - as in NOTHING at all. Not even nuclear powered vessels were allowed. The Americans went bonkers. I had class mates who went nuts and physically poked me in the chest howling about how NZ could tell them what to do. Anytime I said "Its their country they can do what they like!" they went even more nuts. The fact that an ally would tell America what to do just freaked them totally out. Most Americans (not all) cannot handle anyone telling them they are wrong about anything. Its a combination of their politics, education and media (film, tv,...) that tells them they are the saviors of the world and the greatest country ever. One of the very few times that was challenged is this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bIpKfw17-yY
