One of Asimov's great observations. Another of his that someone else pointed out last year is: “There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there always has been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.” ― Isaac Asimov, News Week, 1980.

I'm an Australian and one of my best mates is a Glaswegian. The saddest part of this is when I look over my shoulder we have them here too. Just the other day they started ranting about the Pfizer vaccine being used here and making wild claims. One person who actually claimed to have a 20 year background in biotech claimed the Pfizer vaccine was "experimental gene therapy." Unfortunately I have another friend with a PhD in Recombinant DNA Research who explained to me years ago how he did his work. Another person claimed the Pfizer vaccine was even registered as "gene therapy." Unfortunately for that clown I was easily able to find our governments website on that and download the documents and SHOW EVERYONE that, that was a fabrication. Sadly I think EVERY country has its idiots and that social media has given them a soap box to share their collective stupidity.

@OrangeHealia That's amazing and brilliant - how do you survive without breathing or eating? Because oxygen is a chemical and you breath it in to survive. Food is an array of many complex chemicals. That's why they have taste and smell and your body can digest them into other chemicals your body needs TO SURVIVE. Sorry but your body is made of chemicals and if you had even a basic education you'd understand that.

@Archbuild-rt Apart from a couple of spelling mistakes you're right absolutely correct. Look at what drove the French Revolution, its one of the best examples of wealth disparity exploding into violence. The Russian Revolution is another one. Even the American Revolution was partly driven by wealth disparity. Time and again all through history the wealthy just pillaged the wealth and eventually drove the peasants into revolt. The thing that scares me is that in the past the peasants had pitch forks these days they have AR-15s. The stupidity of todays wealthy is they live in townhouses not castles. Castles are useful against angry mobs with pitch forks but townhouses don't offer anything against AR-15s.

@marquisdemoo1792 I'm really looking forward to the Foundation series when I can get it. I've read the entire robots through Foundation including the short stories. I started circa 1985 and It took me years but I eventually found a second hand copy of "The Currents of Space" around 2008 to finish it off. I have also read the Caliban trilogy by Roger MacBride Allen which is worth it as it explores a variation of the 3 laws with Caliban himself being unique as a positronic Robot (no spoiler in case you haven't read it). I have read a lots of Robert Silverberg who also collaborated with Asimov. Personally I don't just see him as a great writer but also as a great thinker and arguably one of the greatest thinkers since the other Isaac. You know the one who realised gravity existed and wrote a few of other basic laws that have some importance. All I know is the world became a lesser place April 6, 1992.

I think the other line about this is: "The village idiot used to be confined to their village. Now thanks to social media they have been able to share their stupidity across the world."
6
Frank Last It not the beginning of the end. The beginning of the end was Thatcherism and Reaganomics when the Western world decided "greed was good."
5
@lenroddis5933 There's a saying going around that basically says (and there are variations): The village idiot used to be confined to the village. Now thanks to social media they can get together and spread their stupidity across the globe. Take your pick on how you want to say it, but social media is such a mix. In that last year I have had many great conversations that made you feel better about being human and then there's the incredible stupidity that you hope God or Aliens (take your pick) aren't going to judge us by.

@Archbuild-rt Your right on left wing peasant revolutions being driven by wealth disparity but right wing revolutions are more complex. We more often think of revolutions as being leftist but there are also right wing revolutions. Think about the Iranian Revolution which was driven by religious conservatives. What's just happened in Myanmar is similar as its a right wing action that's just a straight out power grab. Consider what almost just took place in America, which was also a straight out power grab. What's also of interest in comparing what just happened in America and what happened in Iran is that both include very strong fundamentalist religious movements who claimed they were being culturally undermined. That's not all of Trumps base but it is a significant chunk of that base.

They are incapable of even thinking. I spent half the weekend pointing out a bullshit claim on another page. Where a person claimed that they were a record keeper in a hospital and said "Having worked in patient record systems, I can attest that adverse reactions are massively underreported" That comment now has over 1200 likes and yet they have not identified what hospital, what state or what country they are from. I challenged that person and they still haven't answered even the most basic question like "in what country?" They got upset when challenged and asked to provide details and they still haven't provided a single detail. The simple fact is that most of these clowns look for comments "they like." They don't care to even think let alone check the most basic facts like what country is this person talking about and what vaccines have had adverse reactions. AND YET these people always demand others provide evidence. Notice how Amie never provided the evidence they claimed they had??????

@marquisdemoo1792 I like that one, do you know when he said it or did it said repeatedly?
3
@marquisdemoo1792 He was a prolific writer and wrote a lot of non-fiction as well as his sci-fi. He did a lot in the early days of Genetics and his 3 laws are still a very important part of AI Research, because it always gets down to "how do we NOT create SkyNet?"

Frank Last Since you haven't named anybody I'll ask - are you referring to Reagan, Trump or Biden. FYI- the rest of the world is still trying to figure how a country (that once put men on the moon) elected any of them. Or for that matter keeps electing people like Bernie Sanders or Mitch McConnell. And have started on the next generation with Cruz, Hawley and Marjorie Taylor Greene. Come on America, you have better people than any of them. I know, I went to college in America and have seen how good Americans can be and this lot you have in Washington are nowhere near the best America has.
3
Frank Last I'm not a yank either, I just went to college there. I was there through one of their primary seasons and could see even back in the late 80s that their system was inherently flawed, because it was based on incredibly hypocritical ideologies. "When my side does something its fine. When their side does the same thing its a crime." They have since exported that to the rest of the world and we are now ALL trapped in this endless stupidity where PEOPLE LIKE YOU rail against one senile old fool (or worse) as you vote for another senile old fool (or worse). 🤷♂️🤷♀️ Democracy is no longer about voting for the best option its now about voting for the less worse option or less destructive or less pathetic option.

@kathyadair8552 Today I saw a video where Dave Rubin said that he missed Trump because Trump told the truth. Today I saw this featuring Harvard & Princeton graduate Ted Cruz. -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQcBbvLOJR8 What hope is there for Western society when we keep letting stupid people say whatever in front of microphones.

@gorey4more837 Firearms here is pretty simple. You can own anything you like if you can get the license for it. We just make certain licenses very very difficult so that we don't have people owning things just to make themselves "feel something." It all changed after the Port Artur Massacre which involved military grade weapons and at the time was the world record for fatalities in a gun rampage. Normally Australians love it when one of us breaks a world record, but no that day. The worst of it was the Mikacs, a mother and 2 young daughters (6 & 3) simply executed. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_Arthur_massacre_(Australia)#Toll_booth_murders_and_carjacking We said never again. Our government bought back any guns people didn't want and there were millions. Oddly before that buy back we had won just a single Olympic medal in shooting sports in 100 years, since then we have won 10 including 5 gold and 2 of those by girls. Restricting our guns hasn't hurt our aim, it hasn't hurt gun clubs or hunters. We just don't let idiots who want to play tough guy be stupid. Our attitude is pretty simple: If you want to play with big powerful guns join the army. If you want to hunt then aim straight because you're not getting large magazines or automatic self loading rifles or shotguns. If you want to win Olympic medals you'll get all the ammunition you need to practice. If you have a "special need" then fine but you will be asked to justify that need. Anybody who owns a gun accepts that they will abide by the rules placed on them or they lose their privileges. Because in Australia gun ownership is a privilege NOT a right.

I think the other line about this is: "The village idiot used to be confined to their village. Now thanks to social media they have been able to share their stupidity across the world." Isaac Asimov had these 2 great observations “There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there always has been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.” ― Isaac Asimov, News Week, 1980. "When stupidity is considered patriotism, it is unsafe to be intelligent." ― Isaac Asimov Then there are these and yes I now have a collection - who doesn't. 🤷♂️🤷♀️ “Logic is an enemy and truth is a menace.” ― Rod Sterling in his introduction to the Twilight episode “The Obsolete Man” June 2, 1961 “Those who can make you believe absurdities, can make you commit atrocities.” ― Voltaire “Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored.” ― Aldous Huxley “Sometimes people don't want to hear the truth because they don't want their illusions destroyed.” ― Friedrich Nietzsche
2
Frank Last Well in that case your being an ignorant POS, because you can't rant and rage on about just one of them being senile when they ALL SUFFER some form of mental illness, just their supporters do. Isaac Asimov said it best about your kind. “There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there always has been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.” ― Isaac Asimov, News Week, 1980.

@marquisdemoo1792 Well there is the problem with Thatcherism it was NEVER BALANCED. It was the British version of Reaganomics and both were based around what Mark Blyth calls neo-liberalism. At its core was the work of people like Milton Friedman who's bullshit was always going to end in tears. "Greed is good" - yeah that was always going end well like it had so many other times in history. Go watch this and you'll get the basics of what Mark Blyth is talking about. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXJD5rE4omY The longer version is below. Watch it and you'll understand that at the time Thatcher and Reagan came along change was needed. I was alive in the1970s & 80s and remember how destructive Australia's union movement was and they had to go. BUT we didn't need that neo-liberalism bullshit where the economists and bankers destroyed our manufacturing, ruined our education system, killed off our skilled labor base and then privatized our infrastructure telling us "it would be better for consumers." The problem was neoliberalism was never the solution to the post war Keynesian model, which time has proven. Neo-liberalism was based on greed and the top 1% have made off with around $50 Trillion USD as they slowly strangled the Western middle classes. If you want to understand this stuff watch this. FYI - Mark Blyth is a professor of political economics at Brown University. Mark Blyth - A Brief History of How We Got Here and Why https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJoe_daP0DE

@gorey4more837 If you want proof Australia has them I have just been arguing with an Australian anti-vaxer who's criticizing a British health care professional whos done nothing but be as accurate as he can be through the pandemic. His names Dr. John Campbell and has a PhD in training nurses. He's done nothing more than collate and present data and summarize what's been happening around the world and all of a sudden the anti-vaxers (including some Australians) spotted one of his vids and they are trolling him like mad. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHH1vWD19Fw I'm wondering what's worse the COVID Pandemic or the Stupidity Pandemic? 🤷♂️🤷♀️ Stupidity is not supposed to be contagious but it certainly seems like it is.

@gorey4more837 There's been a lot of talk lately about how in the past that news services at least agreed on basic facts even though they differed on the interpretation of them. This is the real damage people like Rupert Murdoch brought to western society and what Trump has used so effectively. Giuliani said it best "Truth isn't truth!" I read Orwell in high school, hated it, but now I wished I could call up my old teachers and thank them. I can see what Orwell warned us about with absolutism and totalitarianism. Totalitarianism more than any other ism relies on people believing what they are told NO MATTER HOW OBVIOUS ITS WRONG. And these days its those very people who scream at the rest of us that we are blind sheep. Their best claim is that "ANTIFA is made up of Fascists." Which is pure Orwellian doublespeak.
2
@bobby sternlicht Wasn't so much correcting but letting people know who he was talking about. Its really easy for people to say stuff these days but get a small detail wrong and then every one dismisses what might be good information.

@mikefish1124 So true and so sad. One of the great pitfalls of modern politics is that things like caring, ability, experience,.... don't matter. The only thing that seems to matter is the ability to spin a narrative that people respond to. Sadly many of those narratives are designed for responses nobody should want.

@johnlarsen4455 That's a damn good question and on first answer I'd say both, depending one what the clown in the room is saying.

@johnlarsen4455 WTF sort of DK-head are you. If you have something to say then say it.

@marvenlunn6086 Its called Dunnnig-Kruger Effect. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunning%E2%80%93Kruger_effect

@gorey4more837 FYI - I do own a gun. I have been in gun clubs and competed in both small bore and full bore rifle competition. When I was in America at college a bunch of my frat brothers hunted and they were incredibly conscious of being gun responsible. All their guns had safety locks on the triggers and all the ammunition was in locked boxes. A couple were ROTC and they were the leaders of gun safety in our frat and they had absolutely no tolerance for clowns. They were more strict about gun safety than any others I have known.

@gorey4more837 One thing I find most interesting in the US gun debate is the history of the NRA. The US NRA wasn't the first NRA it was Britain that after WW1 decided that it needed a way to train its entire male population basic rifle skills so that if war happened again the entire male population would be ready. Most of the British empire followed including Australia. Ours eventually changed its name and became a sports association as did many others. The US NRA used to be the main sports association for shooting events and held national championships, selected US representatives for the Olympics and other events, BUT most of all promoted gun safety and GUN CONTROL LAWS. It was for many years the main block to what the gun industry wanted which was to be able to sell more guns. In the early 70s the pro-gun lobby got tired of the NRA and instead of trying to get past it simply took it over and flipped its entire reason to exist on its head becoming the vile disaster that it now is. The other truly odd thing about the 2nd Amendment is that it doesn't actually guarantee individual gun ownership. I do know that among some of the founding fathers it did mean individual gun ownership but to most it wasn't about individual it was about the security of local communities. Look at the opening phrase "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the SECURITY of a free State,...." How often does the NRA mention that part? And how often do they ever discuss what a "well regulated militia" is? Do you know that the 2nd A. is actually the 1st statute by ANY nation in history that states that the Government shall not use the military to police the population but will use a separate dedicated "militia"? Its actually one of the most profound legislative actions in the development of modern society. The reason Australia and the rest of the western world actually has police forces is because America led the way. Otherwise we would still be like it was in the Roman empire. The tragedy is that one of the greatest achievements in the development of human society has been hijacked by an incredibly selfish minority. An American who I befriended in Australia had an epiphany after living here and went back and checked what it was all about. We had some really good chats about it when he re-visited Australia.

@gorey4more837 As I keep pointing out, the Bill of Rights is one of the greatest achievements in human history: It protects the right to speak out. It guarantees the population has a say in their security. The government can't simply take or use your property. The government can't simply come into your home. If the government accuses you of anything its must do so fairly, adjudicate fairly and if called for punish fairly. The fact its been hijacked and twisted is barely recognizable is one of the greatest tragedies in human history. The saddest part of that is the people screaming the loudest as its "so called protectors" are right now its worst enemies. How can you be protecting the constitution when you are busy tearing apart the capitol building and preventing the legal and lawful operation of the constitution by the legally elected members of the government? “Logic is an enemy and truth is a menace.” ― Rod Sterling in his introduction to the Twilight episode “The Obsolete Man” 1961.

@gorey4more837 You're spot on politics is about point scoring at all cost. Imagine what basketball would turn into if the only way to score was by dunking and you allowed NFL tackling and NASCAR to be involved. Go watch the original Rollerball and you'll find out. Its actually one of the most misunderstood and underrated dystopian films ever made. Under the main story is "what happens when capitalism is taken to its most extreme." If you watch it there's a zoom meeting where John Houseman (edit: I originally had John Houston) says "the game was created to demonstrate the futility of individual effort." Its not shown in the trailer but you hear it said 2:15 -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtkvGfJbmQA At least watch the trailer the 1st minute monologue is almost prophetic about our time when he talks about "corporate society." It sounds crazy but look at how much influence Murdoch, Bezos and others have via their media ownership. Did you know that Uber just wrote the new labor law in California? On Murdoch he was born in Australia (sadly we can't deny that). He inherited the family business which was in publishing and quickly learned that trash sells better than fact. He moved the Britain where among other things he started the SKY network. SKY-News Australia is his version that exists here. So its not like simply like FOX, it is FOX-Australia. We are currently having a media inquiry (like a US Senate hearing) into media ownership and the ideologies that get promoted. Murdoch has mastered selling opinion as fact and we have numerous current and ex-politicians who are sick of it. the main protagonist in that is Kevin Rudd who was our Prime Minister at one stage. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Rudd#Petition_for_a_Royal_Commission_to_ensure_a_strong,_diverse_Australian_news_media

Beverley Ibrahim Yeah the issue nobody in the Western World wants to really discuss - the millions of religious fanatics with guns IN AMERICA. We are always hearing about the risks of letting fanatics have access to nuclear weapons. Here's a not so fun question. Which country has nukes AND has used them against another country AND has at least 74million delusional religious fanatics who not only voted for a radical clown but also HAVE guns AND have people on television advocating genocide?

@bobby sternlicht OK.

FOR ANYONE INTERESTED I checked on the name Reiner Ruellmich and all I found was a Dr. Reiner Fuellmich (with an F). My search turned up a German born Lawyer based in Los Angles and registered with the California Bar Association. Go look him up if you like, but from all I can see he is a garbage lawyer seeking ridiculous claims against the entire world for the pandemic. He is supposedly part of some COVID committee (the German Corona investigation committee) hearing evidence from professionals, but that seems about as credible as Giuliani's so called hearings into election fraud as in its a "self appointed" not Government or other official appointed committee. I did not find out what the Dr. title is for. All I kept seeing is that he is a consumer protection lawyer NOT a lawyer who handles medical damages and claims.

Yes and No If no one challenges them then they just keep sharing their stupidity. Some no one can reach like a drug addict who doesn't want help. BUT there are those who do want and explanation and if we can reach them then we need to at least try.
