I'm Australian and we studied Animal Farm and 1984 in high school. Almost every Australian over 40 studied 1 or the other in high school. When we studied Animal Farm we mainly looked at the comparisons to Soviet Russia (not current Russia but Soviet Russia). When we studied 1984 we studied what sort of political system it was and what it did to people. The society described in 1984 isn't communist or socialist its totalitarian. We looked at systems that people "claimed" to be socialism and or communism. I emphasize the word "claimed" because what most people claim to be a political ideology these days is barely recognizable as what they claim. What we saw in East Germany, Russia, China,....etc. wasn't socialist or communist it was totalitarian in that the ruling elite had total control even down to thinking. Look at North Korea these days what "ism" is it? Its not communist, its not socialist and its certainly not a democracy despite the official name being the "Democratic People's Republic of Korea." Strip away the bullshit and any of these "isms" come down to 1 of 2 things -> A small group of elitist sociopaths who want control over everything and having a mechanism to get away with it OR a group of idealists who want a better world but have trouble recognizing that the first group will never let them have it.

@peter the first thing we need to teach EVERYONE about critical thinking is that it is NOT about criticizing or deciding importance. Its about critiquing as in analyzing, evaluating and reasoning. That's probably the single biggest misnomer I see in the discussion - people NOT understanding what critical thinking means let alone how to do it.

@panam4974 Yeah, I'd agree with that, but its starting point. Considering we have an African American harping on about CRT when he clearly doesn't know what it is then we all need to at least start with something. The Wikipedia page might be the be all and end all but at least people can start with a basic premise. Half the problem in the world right now with almost all political discussion is that so many discussions start with 2 sides who can't even agree on what the basic facts are. It used to be a case of people arguing over what the facts meant. Now we can't eve agree on what the basic facts are. The reason I put up the Wiki link was so that, even if we disagree on what CRT is, we can at least start with something common that anybody can look up. 🤷♂️🤷♀️

@notme2day Agreed and that is the crux of the issues. If you look at Trump's background he was involve din pro-wrestling which is all built around fantasy. Its fans all live in this fantasy world where its made out to be real. I think that Trump at some point realised he could use that to do more than just entertain. Look at his rallies and the style employed. Its straight out of the pro-wrestling handbook. I suspect that a lot of his base KNOW its bullshit but they are now so heavily invested in it they can't get out or they can't see a way out. Its that mob mentality where they follow the loudest voice even when that voice is running them off a cliff or as Jim Jones did to the Kool Aid bucket. The worst part of it is that Trump like others of his kind is so narcissistic that he doesn't care. He's literally drunk on the attention. Watch the body language - he's intoxicated by the attention.

@vampirehunterd2561 Understandable on everything. On the divisive nature of Trump I actually had an argument with a Trumpist about how he failed to be a unifying influence on America. When I stated that one of POTUS's principal tasks was to unite the American people they literally screamed back. That's a major issue when you have a massive chunk of a population who think their sides objective is to have a leader who dominates over the other side. That's been tried for centuries in the form of kings, emperors and chieftains AND IT NEVER WORKED. IT ALWAYS COLLAPSED INTO CIVIL WAR. Sooner or later the other side simply says they have had enough of being dominated and just revolts. Look at what's driving the shit Gaza right now. Look at what drove the French Revolution, the American Revolution, the British Wars of the Roses and going way, way, back through history. It may have been different flavors but it was the same short of shit again and again.

@raymack8767 Good question? I was just trying to give people a starting point with the Wikipedia link. Reading some of it I get the impression that people who promote this stuff are more trying to hype up their own intellect rather than inform or educate anyone. It smells more like an intellectual bullshit fest rather than a way to explain anything. I did engineering and had to do a required number of units of "humanities" to make me a more "well rounded" person. Yeah bullshit to that. All I found with the liberal arts was a pack of clowns trying to prove they were smarter than they actually were. They were all so desperate to put meaningless labels on everything that they forgot the most pressing thing humanity needs - solutions.
