One of my favorite quotes over the past few years. πππππππ Although its aimed primarily at America it does apply to EVERY other nation to some extent. I'm Australian and we have these sorts of people too. We can easily swap out United States and put in Australia and it would work just as well. I was in Canada for work a couple of years ago and they have them as well. We know the Brits fairly well and they have no shortage of them. The still keep sending them to Australia. π€·ββοΈπ€·ββοΈ Go look at any international news broadcast and you'll quickly realise everyone has these people. What's different about America is how many of them speak in front of a microphone no matter how stupid they sound or look.

Β @desertegle40calΒ It was in the Foundation novels, which he started writing as short stories in 1942. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foundation_series Its in one of those stories where a person from the Foundation ventures back into the remnants of the Empire. They get to a planet where things are starting to fall apart and they talk to "the engineer in charge" who is only the engineer in charge because the father was the engineer in charge. The term engineer had become a hereditary title NOT a qualification. I remember that because I was doing my degree in aerospace engineering at the time. It was in those stories Asimov developed the term "psychohistory." Which is basically a statistical method of predicting what a society will do based on emotional inputs. It was an extension to mob psychology where the accuracy was a function of the size of the mob. Hari Seldon (the lead character) wasn't dealing with just a mob he was dealing with millions of planets with billions of people on each, which made his calculations even more accurate. A couple of years later I was back in Australia doing post-grad studies. I was in the library one day looking for a specific journal as part of a literature search and stumbled across volumes of the "Journal of Psychohistory." That was circa 1988/89. So by the end of the 1980s what Asimov had written about starting in the 1940s had become a real area of science that people were doing serious academic work in. Have a look at the first subject under the heading similar concepts. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychohistory_(fictional) Now you know a bit more of HOW and WHY they (our political masters) do what they do in campaigns. π€·ββοΈπ€·ββοΈ

Β @desertegle40calΒ Well you hit an obvious Asimov fan. Beyond what he was as a novelist - I think he was one of the greatest thinkers of the 20th century. Its a shame we can't get his take on the Trump era.

Β @desertegle40calΒ He' snot the only one who's proposed that kind of theory. Isaac Asimov one of the most underestimated thinkers of the 20th century based his entire Foundation series around the concept that if you don't maintain your education system society will collapse. For those you have forgotten or never read the books that's the main issue why it was predicted the galactic empire would collapse. It was a technological society that wasn't educating enough technical people to keep the basic infrastructure running. If you apply that to modern Western Society we have a massive issue with keeping the infrastructure that enables our societies to work operating as we expect. Its a really serious discussion that nobody seems to want to have. Its not an American issue either - its right across the entire Western World. I'm Australian but went to college in America and did aerospace engineering and read Asimov. I was concerned then and horrified now. In Oz we have NOT built any new power stations, water storage dams or other critical system in 20+ years. meanwhile our population has grown by over 25% putting even more load on the ageing systems we have. When I look around the world its similar everywhere, but who wants to listen to any of us bastard engineers. We might interfere with the lawyers, accountants and executives who want their bonuses.
