Your part right, it wasn't just those films its the whole Hollywood romanticising guns issue. Think about the American films on War. Irrespective of whether it was the War of Independence, the Indian Wars, the cowboy land wars, the 1st or 2nd World Wars Hollywood has been 1 giant propaganda machine promoting the "Good guy (or girl) with a gun" fantasy. How many people did John Wayne kill on film? I honestly don't know but I'd bet its in the 100s if not over 1000. Arnie Swartz once commented (as a joke) at the premier of one of his films "We toned down this film. We only killed 250." or words to that effect.

I'm Australian and have been around guns most of my life. In the past I have competed in both small bore and big bore rifle. We went through this in 1996 after Port Arthur. One of the defining parts of that horrendous day was the execution of Nanette Mikac and her children, Madeline, 3, and Alannah, 6. The sight of those 2 tiny white coffins at the funeral is seared into our collective conscious. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_Arthur_massacre_(Australia)#Toll_booth_murders_and_carjacking Of note before Port Arthur and the gun by back Australia had one a single Olympic shooting medal in 100years. Since that time we have won 10 medals, 5 of those gold and 2 of those gold by women. Yes since that time we have had shootings and a few of those were horrible family murder/suicides. But neither Canada, Australia or the rest of the western world is like America. Someone the other day mentioned Canada so I checked Wikipedia. They list massacres (of all types) and since 1986 Canada has had 10 massacres with 7 involving guns. The American list FOR JUST mass shootings has 14 so far this year and that's only because there's multiple definitions in America of what is and isn't a mass shooting event. On PBS last week during the Brookes and Capehart discussion they said 3,000 - so far this year.

Their supporters might not be rational but their leaders are NOT. They know exactly what they are doing. Jeff Daniels in his famous what makes America great rant. Its right here at 2:18 -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bIpKfw17-yY From the political side - it doesn't cost money it costs votes.

@SonOfTamriel That's an ugly way to put it and utterly TRUE. I'm old enough to have seen a lot of the stuff they pumped out after WW2. Growing up through the 70s and 80s Germans, Japanese and native Americans (as in every last one of them) were seen in a very negative light. There has been a "Hollywood narrative" and its been there a very long time. Don't forget Superman's reason for being on Earth wasn't to protect the Australian way, Canadian way, British way or French or any other way. Although there is an incredibly interesting side thought to his line "Truth, Justice and the American Way" because it implies that Truth and Justice are NOT part of the American Way otherwise why mention them as separate ideals.

EVERYONE it was answered by Jeff Daniels in his famous what makes America great rant. Its right here at 2:18 -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bIpKfw17-yY From the political side - it doesn't cost money it costs votes. What the Dems don't get is that they will NEVER get those votes anyway and NOT doing anything costs votes.
